Something that caught my attention today as it happens just around the corner from my home in Austria. OMV has laid the foundation stone for a 140 MW green hydrogen electrolysis plant in Austria, one of the largest in Europe. By 2027, it aims to produce 23,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, cutting refinery emissions by up to 150,000 tons, accroding to a press release. This is a serious investment, running into the hundreds of millions, and signals clear intent to explore hydrogen as part of OMV’s Strategy 2030. But it’s worth stepping back: - Scale matters: 23,000 tons sounds large, yet it only offsets roughly 10% of one refinery’s direct emissions. The gap between hydrogen’s promise and its ability to meaningfully decarbonize heavy industry remains vast. - Resource trade-offs: Electrolysis requires significant renewable power. Is the smartest use of green electricity to produce hydrogen for refining, or to electrify sectors more directly? - Hydrogen’s role: It may well be essential in hard-to-abate sectors. But there’s also the risk of hydrogen hopium: banking too heavily on a technology that is still costly, subsidy-dependent, and slow to scale. Projects like OMV’s move the technology forward but they also highlight the balancing act between innovation, hype, and genuine impact in the energy transition. What do you think: Is green hydrogen a cornerstone of our future energy mix, or just one piece in a much bigger puzzle? #OMV is proud to announce the groundbreaking for one of Europe’s largest #greenhydrogen electrolysis plants! Our 140 MW facility in Bruck an der Leitha, Austria will be the largest in South-Eastern Europe, producing up to 23,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, a vital feedstock in the production of sustainable fuels and chemicals. This will help cut up to 150,000 tons of CO₂ emissions at our Schwechat refinery. Thanks to strong partnerships with Siemens Energy and STRABAG, we’re driving real progress in sustainable energy. This project is a key part of OMV’s Strategy 2030 and our commitment to a climate-neutral future. #ForwardforGood

⚡Another day, another milestone towards #ClimateNeutrality: OMV launches a new project for a #GreenHydrogen plant 💧🏭 in Bruck an der Leitha, Austria. Following the April announcement of the launch of its largest green hydrogen production facility at the Schwechat refinery site near Vienna, OMV continues to place green hydrogen at the heart of its #Strategy2030. The new plant, scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2027, will boost Austria’s green hydrogen production and significantly enhance the #sustainability of industrial processes. “The construction of our state-of-the-art plant for green hydrogen sends a strong signal for the #EnergyTransition. We are creating an integrated ecosystem based on the use of green hydrogen – supported by technological innovation, modern infrastructure, political support, and strong partnerships,” said Alfred Stern, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of OMV. For the implementation of this project, OMV is partnering with Siemens Energy and STRABAG. 🤝 Together, they will produce up to 23,000 tons of hydrogen annually, making a significant contribution to CO₂ reduction. 📌 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gHnSqe8q #LowCarbonNews #TransitionInMotion

#OMV today reported significant progress on its Strategy 2030 to become an integrated sustainable energy, fuels and chemicals company. The company announced updated financial and strategic targets, reflecting the influence of economic and geopolitical volatility on OMV’s businesses. To further strengthen financial resilience, OMV adjusts cumulative organic CAPEX by a total of EUR 5 billion between 2026 and 2030, enhances efficiency, and de-risks its transformation by strategically adjusting the pace of its sustainable investments. OMV CEO Alfred Stern: "Our updated targets and strategic initiatives reinforce OMV’s long-term resilience and prepare us for a successful future amid a challenging environment. We are dedicated to responsible growth and value creation for our stakeholders. With strong progress on the Neptun Deep project and the expansion of our diversified gas portfolio, we are ideally positioned to secure energy supply in Europe and strengthen our market position. The creation of Borouge Group International marks a significant milestone in our Chemicals’ strategy, providing access to attractive growth regions and advanced technology. Our shareholding in Borouge Group International, the renewable fuels projects and our portfolio of gas projects are key strategic growth drivers for the future.” #ForwardforGood Discover more here: https://lnkd.in/daXrrabZ
