GEOTHERMAL ENERGY FOR MALTA Geothermal energy is a sustainable and almost endless form of energy with no carbon footprint. Malta has not investigated its geothermal energy potential, although it could be part of the solution for Malta's energy needs. Harnessing geothermal energy, particularly for electricity generation, requires three main components in the Earth's subsurface, often referred to as a geothermal reservoir: Heat 🔥: An abundant source of heat found deep underground in hot rocks. For electricity generation, this typically requires high temperatures (generally 150∘C or more for power plants, though newer binary-cycle plants can use lower temperatures). Fluid 💧: Sufficient fluid (water or steam) to absorb the heat from the hot rocks and carry it to the surface. New Zealand’s government has allocated NZ$60 million to accelerate exploration of supercritical geothermal energy, aiming to access reservoirs at extreme temperature and pressure conditions that could transform the country’s baseload renewable capacity.

Geothermal energy may finally be on the cusp of a breakthrough in Canada, according to a recent feature in Canada’s National Observer.  The article by Darius Snieckus describes how Alberta’s deep drilling expertise is being redirected toward tapping the immense heat beneath the ground.   Canada’s geothermal potential is vast—estimated at “one million times” current national power demand—and largely untapped.   New drilling and circulation technologies are rapidly changing the economics, making geothermal viable in more regions and at lower cost. Here's a question that sounds absurd: What if the solution to the energy crisis has been beneath your feet the entire time? We've been chasing solar panels and wind turbines while ignoring the most reliable energy source available. One that operates 24/7 regardless of weather. Geothermal facilities had a 70% capacity factor, the largest among all renewable sources. Compare that to solar (25%) or wind (35%). Geothermal isn't playing the same game; it's winning a different one. But here's where it gets interesting: geothermal has been dismissed as niche because traditional drilling costs $2-10 million per well. New techniques like enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) are cracking fractured rock 3+ miles underground, dramatically reducing costs and unlocking resources previously thought impossible to tap. Iceland's geothermal power facilities currently generate 25% of the country's total electricity production. Meanwhile, geothermal energy in the Great Basin of Nevada and adjoining states could produce electricity equal to one-tenth of the current U.S. power supply. That's a staggering gap between potential and reality. Here's the second-order effect nobody's discussing: as grid operators scramble to balance intermittent renewables, they need baseload power desperately. Geothermal suddenly becomes the anchor tenant in a diverse energy portfolio—not the alternative energy footnote it's been treated as. This creates a downstream effect: mining operations, data centres, and heavy manufacturing will migrate to geothermal-rich regions, reshaping industrial geography. Investment in EGS has tripled since 2020. Companies like Commonwealth Fusion and Fervo Energy are attracting serious capital. This isn't speculative technology anymore—it's entering commercialization. The real story isn't about geothermal energy. It's about energy sovereignty. The regions with accessible geothermal resources will become the power players in the next decade—literally and figuratively.
