I have been spending a fair bit of time on the UK energy-from-waste (EfW) sector, with my colleagues at Stratus Energy Partners and over the past few years. While the sector has taken significant strides to decarbonise, investors and operators are facing several challenges that need to be proactively managed: ▪️ Regulatory uncertainty – UK ETS scope expansion to cover EfW from 2028, extended producer responsibility (EPR), and landfill bans are reshaping incentives for the entire value chain. Companies now require sharper compliance strategies and stronger stakeholder engagement to stay ahead of changes in policy. ▪️ Commercial models under pressure – Rising construction and financing costs are meeting volatile waste supply contracts and fluctuating gate fees. Investors are demanding clearer visibility on long-term revenue streams especially in light of waste incineration bans in Scotland and Wales, and a moratorium in England. ▪️ Carbon & circular economy – EfW is increasingly scrutinised through the lens of net-zero. Carbon capture and utilisation (CCUS) is no longer optional — government mechanisms like the Industrial Carbon Capture (ICC) sequencing process play a key role in supporting eligible projects. ▪️ Policy & local government dynamics – With residual waste volumes expected to decline, councils and operators must balance contractual commitments with the reality of reduced feedstock. Flexibility in contract structures is becoming a competitive advantage. ▪️ Recycling integration – The drive towards higher recycling rates and resource recovery means EfW can’t exist in isolation. Hybrid models that integrate recycling, material recovery, and EfW are likely to attract policy support and private capital. 💡 If you are an EfW investor/operator or you just like the sector, reach out!

Our Weilong Zhaoqing High-Tech Logistics Park has achieved carbon neutrality and obtained Zero Waste to Landfill certification for its operations in FY2024, a step forward in our journey to reduce our emissions. Approximately 98% of the total emissions reduced (more than 30,000 tonnes of CO2e) were the result of direct reductions at source, namely through renewable energy deployment and energy efficiency upgrades. The remaining 2% of unavoidable emissions (close to 587 tonnes of CO2e) were offset through verified carbon credits registered with Verra. The entire process, from our greenhouse gas inventory to the carbon neutrality verification, was conducted in accordance with two ISO standards, ISO 14064-1 and ISO 14064-3:2019, and independently verified by Bureau Veritas. While this project is a small step in our decarbonisation efforts, projects like this help us test and scale solutions that can be applied more widely across our operations and supply chain. We see the outcomes that we have achieved as one part of a longer journey, one that will require continuous progress, innovation, and accountability along the way. 🚀 #Germany Takes a Bold Step in Industrial Decarbonisation! Germany has launched a 6 billion euro funding programme targeting energy-intensive sectors like chemicals, steel, cement, and glass, now including Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in its climate protection contracts for the first time. 📅 Companies must register their projects by 1 December, with the auction expected to start mid-2026. Contracts will be awarded to projects delivering the lowest CO₂ savings per ton, ensuring both impact and efficiency. Subsidized companies will need to meet binding emissions reduction targets. 💡 Industry groups welcome the flexible approach and CCS inclusion, emphasizing pragmatism in balancing climate goals against economic challenges like high energy costs and declining industrial performance. This initiative marks a major milestone in Europe’s green transition, supporting sustainable industrial growth and climate action. 🔗 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dfVxnvfP #Germany #IndustrialDecarbonisation #CCS #Sustainability #GreenTransition #EnergyIntensiveSectors #ClimateAction #EUClimateGoals

GWP Group Boosts Sustainability with New On-Site Wastewater Treatment Facility GWP Group Limited has enhanced its sustainability efforts by investing in a new wastewater treatment plant at its Cricklade production site. The facility, supplied by CTECH Europe and AA Environmental, eliminates the need to transport 350,000 liters of wastewater annually, significantly reducing operational costs and carbon emissions. Previously, wastewater was stored on-site and transported in tankers for off-site treatment, generating environmental impacts from transportation. The new system, which includes an equalization tank, treatment tank, and filter press, allows for on-site treatment that meets Environment Agency standards, improving operational efficiency and reducing leak and spill risks. James Pedley, Group Operations Manager, highlighted the environmental benefits and operational improvements. This project complements GWP’s ongoing sustainability actions, including LED lighting conversion, electric delivery vehicles, and solar panel installations since mid-2024. #papernews #pulpnews #GWPGroup #wastewatertreatment #sustainability #carbonreduction #environmentalimpact #CTECHEurope #energyefficiency #greeninitiatives

Government Backs Full-Scale EfW Project 🌱 The UK Government has officially backed the country's first full-scale carbon capture project at an Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facility - a significant step forward in aligning waste management with net-zero targets. Led by Encyclis, the facility will integrate carbon capture storage technology into EfW operations, aiming to process up to 500,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste per year ♻️ This move supports the UK's decarbonisation goals and marks the beginning of a more climate-positive future.
