Twice a year, we release a Transparency Report documenting the requests the Wikimedia Foundation receives to alter or remove content from Wikimedia projects and to provide nonpublic information about users. Transparency is a cornerstone of the Wikimedia movement. In this report, you can learn what sorts of requests we receive, where they are from, and which projects received requests. We evaluate each case thoroughly and work with the volunteer community to determine the best outcome. We push back against requests that could harm users’ human rights or affect the volunteers’ ability to enforce community guidelines for neutrality, content quality, and citation. And when we must respond to the small number of valid takedown notices we receive, we tell you. Read the full report ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eT4kTrdZ

Just attended the Wikimedia UK AGM - as an observer - and was interested in a question posed to candidates standing for trustee positions. "I'd like to see increased public awareness of how Wikipedia works behind the scenes, Do candidates have any ideas about this?" Some of the candidates mentioned leveraging Wikimedia's partnerships. I would suggest that actively engaging with CILIP, the library and information association, to spread the word to practicing or prospective Librarians (including cataloguers and metadata managers), would be a great way to embed the principles of open knowledge and open metadata in our profession. We all can/should be advocates for openness. It's also worth reiterating that creating, sharing, enriching and preserving metadata (e.g., via LoD Wikidata) drives search and discovery across GLAM collections. What can we do better together and in partnership with Wikimedia UK?

We are proud to stand with libraries, archives, and other memory institutions around the world in support of digital rights by signing the Statement on the Four Digital Rights of Memory Institutions. Our longstanding collaborations—through GLAM-Wiki and Wikimedian in Residence programs—have shown how these rights are essential in preserving and expanding open access to free knowledge and cultural heritage for everyone, everywhere, now and for generations to come.
Another major milestone for the Our Future Memory campaign! We're thrilled to announce that Wikimedia Foundation has signed the Statement on the Four Digital Rights of Memory Institutions, joining a growing number of supporters. This endorsement matters. As the organisation behind Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata, Wikimedia knows better than most that preserving and sharing knowledge depends on strong digital rights. As Wikimedia Foundation's Stan Adams puts it, “Wikimedia projects and memory institutions share a common mission: to provide access to the world's knowledge and cultural heritage.” That's why the “Wikimedia Foundation is proud to stand together with these institutions to safeguard their ability to continue the valuable work of preserving and sharing the world's knowledge and culture, online and offline.” The four essential rights at the heart of our campaign are: 1. Right to Collect 2. Right to Preserve 3. Right to Lend 4. Right to Cooperate With the Wikimedia community joining forces alongside the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and growing international support, we're pushing forward to build the legal framework needed to protect our future memory! Social media platforms have the resources to swiftly and systematically remove harmful content at scale. When it comes to content like child pornography and copyright infringement, the platforms demonstrate effective enforcement of their policies with high removal rates. However, for other harmful content, such as antisemitism, we see significantly lower removal rates. What's missing is the data-driven guidance and specialized expertise. That's why organizations like CyberWell are critical. We provide the essential subject matter expertise and best practices recommendations to empower Trust & Safety teams. Our goal is to equip the platforms to treat antisemitism with the same effectiveness and urgency they apply to all other forms of violative content. The technical capabilities exist. Our work focuses on closing the gap between the policy and enforcement to ensure safer digital spaces for the Jewish community and all communities.

In addition to Wikipedia, the Mediawiki software that runs it, and add ons like Semantic Mediawiki and community behind it helps propel organizations with their own internal knowledge management which can be helpful for use by AI.
Wikipedia has been named one of the most iconic companies in Internet history 🎉 "The Webby 30", a new curated list from The Webby Awards, spotlights influential companies and organizations that drive creativity, connection, and culture in the digital world. Since its founding in 2001 with a mission to capture all the world’s knowledge, Wikipedia has become the default, trustworthy reference for billions of people worldwide. It has sparked a movement that has grown to include images, videos, and data that help give a peek into lives, languages, and cultures across the globe. All of this is possible thanks to the Wikimedia community – the volunteers, editors, donors, and readers who have supported this project for nearly 25 years. Another fantastic piece of investigative journalism by Lars Lofgren on the persistent brand reputation attacks to Codesmith on Reddit. Persistent attacks resulted in the estimated decline of -40% revenue from this negative sentiment. "We have to remember that Reddit isn’t just Reddit anymore. The powers that be have decided that Reddit is infallible, a reliable set of training data for LLMs, and should be featured fucking everywhere." Google's algorithm prioritised Reddit visibility in the SERPs around April 2025. (see attached image) It's never been more important to try and manage your reputational image online. That starts with offering great product(s)/service(s) but as we know perception can be very different from reality. https://lnkd.in/eHn4RSiK

🆕 Through the Outreach Programme, Wikimedia CH is expanding its role in advocacy and raising awareness of the values of the Wikimedia Movement. 🎯 The aim is to position Wikimedia as a representative of free knowledge in national and international networks on topics such as digitisation, artificial intelligence, data protection, and more. 🌐 Our membership in the new SDS (Souveräne Digitale Schweiz, Sovereign Digital Switzerland) network is a good illustration of our commitment. This network connects Swiss organisations from the public and private sectors with a view to promote professional exchange. A digital library has been built inside Minecraft to bypass censorship in countries with restricted press freedom. Known as the "Uncensored Library," it stores banned articles, independent journalism, and reports from places where access to free information is blocked. Players can enter and read these texts inside the game, making it a powerful tool for digital resistance. The library is designed as a massive neoclassical-style structure, with grand halls dedicated to specific countries. Each section highlights journalists’ work that has been silenced at home but preserved here for the world to read. The project was created by Reporters Without Borders and has become a symbol of how technology and creativity can protect press freedom and ensure knowledge remains accessible. #PressFreedom #minecraft #censorship #DigitalResistance #freeinformation

GMN INTERVIEW | MISINFORMATION AND DISINFORMATION - nbc: The Forum on Internet Freedom in Africa (FIFAfrica) is an important platform that brings together experts, activists, and civic organisations to discuss how to protect digital rights and open civic spaces. This year, one of the sessions, "Digitalise Youth – From Hashtags to Policy: Digital Rights and Youth Engagement for Open Civic Space", focuses on how young people are shaping conversations around accountability, human rights, and democracy in the digital age. A central concern is the rise of misinformation and disinformation. These distortions of truth are not only undermining public trust but also threatening civic freedoms, endangering journalists, and fuelling division in many African societies. Nomshado Lubisi from Code for Africa, a civic tech and data journalism network that works to safeguard information integrity and empower citizens. https://lnkd.in/d3Mu-mpH
