The Deafening Silence: When Truth Gets Drowned Out Military flyovers were ordered to drown out the sexual assault survivors speaking on Capitol Hill. But survivors face their own daily “flyovers”: lies, manipulation, bribes, weaponized disabilities, and endless monologues that isolate them from professional and social circles while severing relationships out of fear of being found out. The playbook is devastatingly effective: deny, deflect, gaslight. Abusers craft lies so believable that witnesses question what they saw, survivors doubt their own reality, and truth itself becomes negotiable. Victims are shamed with: “If you saw the signs, why did you come back for more?” Witnesses and victims are bribed or threatened. And often the details of trauma only trickle out, piece by piece, for fear of safety, fear of disbelief, or because memories stay buried until they are triggered. Narcissism and Alzheimer’s share one cruel similarity: moments of kindness followed by disorientation. Abusers offer just enough kindness to keep victims confused, hoping they will change. When the abuse resumes, victims are left reeling, torn between hope and harm. This isn’t just individual trauma. It is a systemic failure. When survivors must band together to tell their truth, we have failed. When “pillars of the community” are shielded while the vulnerable are silenced, we have failed. Media Trials: A Threat to Justice: Media is often called the fourth pillar of democracy, meant to expose flaws and serve society. But media trials—where news outlets declare someone guilty without due process—pose a serious risk to justice. Such trials ignore facts, spread bias, and can unfairly influence judges, investigators, and public opinion. Even if the accused is later acquitted, they often live under lifelong stigma, harming not just them but also their families. While Article 19 grants freedom of speech, it has limits. To uphold dignity and fairness, the media must act responsibly and regulations must prevent misuse of this powerful platform.
