While South Africa has progressive policies and standards on energy, water, and biodiversity, what is needed for a truly green future is stronger collaboration and policies specifically targeting the built environment to accelerate decarbonisation in the sector. In August, GBCSA held a successful workshop focusing on the NDC (Nationally Determined Contributions) Scorecard. The workshop brought together a diverse group of participants and created a collaborative platform where stakeholders shared ideas and unpacked the challenges and opportunities within the built environment. What was unearthed at the workshop was that government, municipalities, industry, and finance institutions need to work together to accelerate implementation and meet NDC targets. Events like these help foster greater connections and conversations that can drive change. It’s one step forward for all these sectors to meet, discuss, and spark the innovative solutions that can see South Africa become a great example of positive transformation of the built environment. ✨ Nearly 100,000 lives in Comoros are now brighter - literally - thanks to a transformative solar streetlight project led by PNUD COMORES and funded by the U.S. Government. In Moroni, the capital, 180 new solar-powered lamps are lighting up public spaces, making streets safer, extending business hours, and boosting the local economy. The initiative is also helping the environment by cutting up to 54 tons of CO₂ emissions every year. This milestone was made possible through a collaborative effort between PNUD COMORES and the UNDP Office of Procurement Climate Crisis and Infrastructure Team (OP/CCIT).
