Discussing software-defined autonomy at The Autonomous 2025

At The The Autonomous Event 2025 in Vienna, I joined global leaders to discuss how we make software-defined autonomy safe and secure. We are entering the era of Physical AI, intelligence moving into the real world to power cars, drones, robots, and entire industries. The opportunities are enormous, but so are the risks. Systems must be safe by design, secure in deployment, and scalable in practice. In our conversation, we explored: - Software-defined vehicles as the foundation for scalable autonomy. Without a robust SDV architecture, it’s impossible to deliver safe Level 3+ systems. - AI at the edge: the key to balancing performance, privacy, and energy efficiency in mission-critical applications like autonomous mobility and robotics. - Semiconductors + software integration:  why tight coupling between silicon and code is essential for real-time, safety-critical decisions. - Business models:  technology alone doesn’t scale. Autonomy requires new approaches to investment, alliances, and monetization. - Europe’s role:  with its engineering talent, focus on safety, and policy leadership, Europe has a unique opportunity to lead in safe and sovereign autonomy. My takeaway: success in autonomy depends on tighter collaboration across technology, business, and government. No single player can solve these challenges alone. Thank you to The Autonomous community and my fellow panelists Kurt Sievers, Georg Kopetz, and Minister Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer for advancing this important dialogue. #PhysicalAI #Autonomy #Collaboration #TheAutonomous2025

Dear Mr. Young Sohn, I had the opportunity to meet you personally backstage during the Start Global Summit in St. Gallen two years ago and to hear your speech there. A few days ago, I heard you on the radio in Vienna. Many things have accelerated in technological innovation worldwide, but it seems that the regulatory environment and general surroundings remain conservative. Could it be that some regions simply do not fit to become frontrunners in this field?

Excellent insights, Young. The call for tight silicon–software integration is spot on — and I’d add that autonomy also depends on coherence at the human–AI layer. Without resilient decision alignment, even the most advanced Physical AI systems risk breakdown. Exciting to see this conversation advancing.
