5 Things You Can Do with Private AI.
Artificial intelligence is everywhere. Kind of. But when you have to pick up children from school or even write an ordinary e-mail, somehow it doesn't want to help. Is there something wrong with you? Or maybe there are solutions that you know nothing about? This is what this article is about. A field of artificial intelligence, sometimes called „Private AI” (Private Artificial Intelligence) is an area of applications that are helpful in everyday life. However, before we delve deeper into this topic, I am going to add some comments...
Almost every self-respecting technological blogger or corporate exec is full of examples of artificial intelligence application. Once, it can be Netflix algorithm selecting heroes for the new series, another time analytics recommending the best way to treat cancer. But that is a misunderstanding. Experts know how far is from these examples (realized with simple predictive analytics and machine learning) to a real artificial intelligence.
Coming back to „Private AI” my comment is similar – currently available consumer solutions are only a substitute for artificial intelligence, however useful enough to think about them seriously. This private artificial intelligence can have a form of a website available in the cloud with which we communicate as with a human being, application on the smartphone or a dedicated device. You can read about a few examples below.
Set up a meeting, Amy.
The advantages of the first solution will be understood by anyone who arranges meetings or calls with several people in everyday work. Especially when our interlocutors come from different companies and we don't have a chance to view their calendars, the coordination of such meetings requires sending on average of 8 emails per meeting. And here a virtual assistant by x.ai comes help (Amy lub Andrew) How to use these services? It's very simple - after creating an account, it is enough to attach our assistant address on CC of our email, and he or she takes further communication between the participants, agrees the date and finally sets a meeting. The website has a free option (quite effectively hidden) and standard prices start from a dozen dollars a month.

Plan me a holiday, Alexa.
A specialized virtual assistant is one kind of a solution, the other is a platform built by Amazon named Echo. For about $ 100, you can now have the best device on the market that combines an ordinary speaker playing your favorite music with some additional features.

Amazon Echo is a voice-controlled assistant that will connect to virtually all websites and allow you to communicate directly with them. Saying "Hi Alexa", you can ask for a weather forecast, the latest news, a recipe for a drink or a Szechuan chicken, order a taxi, dim the lights, adjust the temperature at home or check where you can fly in July for $ 500. Thanks to open architecture, Alexa's new skills appear daily and are available for free on Alexa Skills. There are already over 25,000 of them.
Hi Google, I'd go to the hairdresser.
The second outstanding platform falling into the area of „Private AI” is Google Assistant. Slightly lower rated as home solution than Amazon Echo and not so universal. But Google makes up the distance very quickly. In particular, if you have an Android phone, Google Assistant seems to be a natural choice. At a recent conference in May 2018, Google surprised everyone with a very fluent conversation between his assistant and the hairdresser. In this respect, the Palo Alto company's solution seems to be ahead of all competitors on the market. Anyway, listen to yourself.
You can use Google Assistant as an application on your phone or as a smart speaker Google Home. The Google solution can talk to you using several voices, including John Legend.
Robot war, die Jibo.
When the world's largest companies start investing in an industry, its profitability is falling dramatically. Apple, Amazon and Google have own „Private AI” platforms, so all independent activities seem to be a very courageous move. US company Jibo decided to go its own way and created one of the first robot assistants, which in addition to intelligence also has a human face, character and allows not only speech recognition, but also two-way video communication.

In my opinion, the future of this type of robots is very limited. The financial and technological advantage of large players will probably force Jibo to produce only a nice housing Amazon or Google platform.
And what's above us?
Astronauts and NASA employees use "Private AI" on a daily basis, so it is not surprising that they would like to have one at hand during the next mission. For instance on International Space Station. Poor wifi coverage in the orbital station, however, caused that they have to reach for a different class of solutions. In June this year, during the next mission, astronauts were supported by another personal assistant called CIMON (Crew Interactive Mobile Companion). This five-kilo, medical-ball like equipment is developed jointly by Airbus and IBM on the IBM Watson platform dedicated to corporate solutions in the field of artificial intelligence.

However, if you are not an astronaut, just looking for a bit of artificial intelligence at home, at the moment select Amazon Echo - maybe it will not pick up your children from school, but at least will tell a goodnight story.

6y7 months after the publication of this text, Jibo reports that the robot project has been closed. In my opinion, it shows how difficult it is to compete with the giants. Jibo joins a long list of hardware start-ups, which fell despite an interesting product (Jawbone, Pebble). The company has raised 60M USD of VC funds, but the money is not enough ... a few days ago the company shut down Jibo servers. https://www.cbinsights.com/research/report/hardware-startups-failure-success/ https://spectrum.ieee.org/automaton/robotics/home-robots/jibo-is-probably-totally-dead-now
