Carbon calories and education

I read on BBC news that our environment is in multiple crisis. While I wasn’t surprised, I am worried that this is happening due to ignorance as opposed to willful attempt to destroy our home, planet earth.

So there is a need for continuous education on the importance of looking after our planet and beyond this, I think we also need a government policy that supports carbon calories (budget) for businesses and individuals. I am aware that Science Based Target (SBT) was designed to address the issue related to capping our carbon emissions so that the world temperature rise is kept below 2°C.

Evolving SBT to make it mandatory for businesses and set up a system that helps consumers to identify products and services committed to less than 20C world when making buying decision would be beneficial to our planet. By this, I am not advocating for cap on industrial growth, I am pushing for a low carbon industrial growth which will guarantee the health of our planet and our prosperity.

Our prosperity will be guaranteed because we can develop a world where we will not be spending trillions of dollars to deal with climate change impacts like flooding, extreme weather, wild fire, drought and health issues. We will be able to channel investments into infrastructures that would make our lives better and low carbon economy that will create jobs and prosperity.

As environmental professionals, I think we need to channel our voice on things that can make us see the world we are yearning for in our generation. We need to do this by using our influence to drive prosperity and planet protection side by side. Let us “calorify” carbon to consumers so that they can use people power to shape sustainable prosperity for our planet.
