"Dream Job" Redefined: How to Build a Career That Shifts With You

Many people dream of landing the career trifecta: money, meaning and mental health. Making that dream a reality in a single job, though, is easier said than done. Indeed’s latest work wellbeing report found only 26% of workers say they’re thriving in their jobs.

Yet 97% of workers in the same survey also said they believe it's possible for people to be happy at work, most of the time.

So how do you bridge that gap? Experts say the trick to finding professional satisfaction is to treat your career values as flexible, not fixed. Change happens — personally and professionally — and what feels most urgent at 25 might not be what matters most at 45.

“Your priorities evolve — and your career should evolve with them,” says Dr. Stephanie Burrows, a counseling psychology professor and career counselor. And when there’s a mismatch between your job and your needs, the signs can be hard to ignore: persistent discontent, loss of motivation or simply dreading logging on at the start of a shift. As one career-changer put it: “If your career no longer aligns with your needs or values, take that realization seriously.”

So what’s the move? Coaches recommend starting with curiosity. Ask yourself what you want more of — and what you want less of. Small experiments, like freelancing, shadowing and side projects, can help you realign without a drastic leap.

The takeaway? You can have money, meaning and mental health in your career — maybe just not all at the same time.
