Effective Communication Strategy for Leaders

Effective Communication Strategy for Leaders

Franca a childhood friend of mine for over 30yrs was now a CEO of a mid-sized company. She called me one day frustrated and out of her wits end because she was struggling to connect with her team.

Every effort she made to communicate in English sounded like she was speaking French. 🤣

Franca: Ish, but this is not funny. Every time I have meetings with them it appears like they are just physically seated but have spiritually wandered off.

Me: Franca you are not asking the right questions. It is obvious your communication style is not working so why not ask them about various styles they are used to and come to a mid-point??

Good Enough (I guess at this point; she didn’t have any options again) she agreed to change her approach.

She started by asking her team members about their communication styles and preferences.

What she learned was eye-opening. Some team members preferred email, while others liked face-to-face conversations.

Armed with this new information, Franca adjusted her communication style to meet the needs of her team. She started sending regular email updates but also made time for one-on-one meetings and team discussions.

As leaders, we know that communication is key to success. But have you ever stopped to think about how you can improve your communication skills to get the best out of your team?

So Back to Franca

The results of her change in Strategy were amazing. Her team became more engaged, motivated, and productive. They felt heard and understood, and she was now able to tap into their collective genius.

So, what can we learn from Franca's story?

Here are a few effective communication strategies for leaders:

1. Know your audience: Take the time to understand your team members' communication styles and preferences.

2. Be adaptable: Be willing to adjust your communication style to meet the needs of your team.

3. Use multiple channels: Don't rely on just one communication channel. Use a combination of email, face-to-face conversations, and team discussions.

4. Listen actively: Pay attention to what your team members are saying, (and what they are not saying) and show that you value their input.

5. Be transparent: Keep your team informed about what's going on in the organization and be honest about challenges and setbacks.

By following these strategies, you can improve your communication skills and become a more effective leader.
