THE COUNTRY
📍ROMANIA
Celebrating its 20 years of presence in Romania, ENGIE is a key player in the country along the entire energy value-chain. More than 4.400 employees are dedicated to 2,3 millions customers, residential and industrial, in gas distribution and storage, gas and power supply, renewable energy generation, and green solutions. That means 23,700 km of network in the southern part of the country, 3 TWh of natural gas storage capacity, 6 photovoltaic and 3 wind parks for an installed capacity of 250 MW, more than 28 TWh of gas and power sold yearly, but consumed smartly by customers helped by our technicians on the field to boost energy efficiency.

ENGIE received authorisation on 7 March from the Chilean National Electricity Coordinator (CEN) to commence commercial operation of its largest renewable energy park in Chile. With installed capacity of 344 MW, the Kallpa wind farm (formerly known as the Lomas de Taltal wind farm) in the Antofagasta region of northern Chile, is now officially part of the company's portfolio.
The $459 million Kallpa wind farm is the second ENGIE facility to enter commercial operation in Chile so far this year, following the 68 MW / 418 MWh Tamaya battery storage farm, also in northern Chile.
Latest news
ENGIE Chile's Tamaya BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) has received authorisation from the National Electricity Coordinator to officially begin operations. This 68 MW / 418 MWh battery project, located in the Antofagasta region, has been under construction since August 2023 on the site of a former diesel power plant. It is coupled with the 114 MWac Tamaya solar power plant. Comprising 152 lithium battery modules, the plant can supply clean energy to power 50,800 homes in Chile during the five hours of peak demand on the National Electric System. It will also reduce CO2 emissions by 42,187 tonnes per year.
Inter-wind turbine cable laying for the 500 MW Yeu-Noirmoutier offshore wind farm resumed on 1 March, and will continue for around 4 months, until summer 2025. An initial 3-month cable-laying campaign began on 1 September, 2024, when 24 of the 61 cables were laid. In all, some 90 km of inter-wind turbine cables will be laid on the seabed by the French company Louis Dreyfus Travocean. Manufactured by the Prysmian group at its plants in Montereau-Fault Yonne (Seine-et-Marne), these cables transfer electricity between the wind turbines and the substation.
ENGIE has signed an agreement for the acquisition of two hydropower plants. The acquisition of the Santo Antônio do Jari Hydropower Plant (Amapá and Pará states) and the Cachoeira Caldeirão Hydropower Plant (Amapá state) will add a further 612 MW of installed capacity to the company’s generator park. The total value of the transaction is approximately R$2.9 billion, consisting of R$2.3 billion in equity value and R$671 thousand in net debt. The two units are to be integrated into the generator facility which today totals 11.3 GW 115 plants, of which 11 are hydroelectric and the remaining 104 fired from complementary sources — biomass, SHPs, wind and solar.
ENGIE has secured the acquisition of a 157 MW renewables operating portfolio in England and Wales, comprising 3 operating onshore wind farms and 4 solar PV parks, from Munich Re’s asset manager. The Group plans to add battery storage and solar farms to the acquired sites, as well as repowering projects.
Following a recent agreement with the Local Planning Authority, ENGIE has made a strategic investment in the Gorst Energy Plant site (Exeter) to maximise the efficiency of its existing facilities. This upgrade will enable the plant to process a greater volume, and a broader variety of feedstocks, significantly boosting its sustainable output without the need for new infrastructure. As a result, the plant now provides renewable electricity to some 1,570 homes – up from 934 – and renewable gas to 3,538 homes – up from 2,389 – across Exeter and East Devon. This investment follows ENGIE’s recent acquisition of Ixora Energy. ENGIE currently has four operational sites in the country and three others in the planning stage.
ENGIE Chile has won the tender for the development for a new substation, located in the municipality of Tiltil, 50 km north of Santiago. This is the first transmission project that the company will develop in the Metropolitan region. This substation will strengthen the national electricity system and facilitate the connection of new production projects in a region that has established itself as a hub for photovoltaic development. This milestone reaffirms ENGIE's commitment to the modernisation of Chile’s energy system, ensuring greater security and efficiency in electrical transmission for renewable energy projects in the country.
The construction of the Bogatell Central of Districlima (Barcelona) has reached a new milestone with the start of tunnelling work. The new facility will be underground and will feature a seawater intake and discharge system to generate high-efficiency cooling. These works are part of the first of four project phases. Two of them will be completed before 2032, and the other two thereafter. Once the first two phases are complete in 2032, the new facility will increase the number of buildings connected to this technology by 33 %, expanding Barcelona's air-conditioned area from the current 1,700,000 m² to 2,496,494 m², equivalent to 250 Eixample city blocks.
After 2032, the completion of all four phases will provide the Bogatell Central with 56 MW of cooling power – 42 MW in direct production and 14 MW through storage.
ENGIE has signed a contract with Einstein Bros.® Bagels, a first step in ENGIE’s commitment to providing 24/7 renewable energy to its commercial customers by 2030, reinforcing the ENGIE Group’s recently announced ambition to offer round-the-clock clean energy solutions worldwide. With this contract that runs until May 2027, ENGIE intends to meet 90% of the hourly electricity consumption for 25 Einstein Bros.® Bagels locations in Texas with Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) from a portfolio of wind and solar assets including ENGIE’s Live Oak Wind Project in Texas.
ENGIE and Orange Romania are strengthening their partnership with a new 10-year agreement that will meet approximately 40 GWh of Orange's annual electricity needs. The green energy will come from one of the wind farms owned and operated by ENGIE Romania. Collaboration on this type of energy purchase began in 2023 with the signing of a first PPA contract, meeting 30 GWh of Orange Romania's consumption needs.
