Global Events in Melbourne...
This time last year I was fortunate to be in Melbourne, which some people would argue is events capital of the world. At first I did not believe this but as time progressed it was evident. The more confident I became being outside my comfort zone of events in Scotland, especially the West of Scotland, the more I learned and saw. I thought it was about time I shared these ideas but also the idea that global events occurring in one city is a common growth and now we live in a globalised world, which in itself makes everything easier to attract and view.
From F1, St Kilda Music Festival, White Night...lets start with that one.
This image highlights a building with a projection on it. Boring? Art? Culturally stimulating? Well, with an estimated 400,000 turning out for an event that lasted 12 hours it was a complete and amazing succeed.
Bands, dance, artists, music, drama everything that had creativity writing all over it was on display. It was for me, the most amazing event i have ever seen. Simply because it shut down the whole of Melbourne's CBD. Literally trams closed, train station limited access - but still getting home - not a problem! On every corner was an organised event. It was amazing. The parks full of about 100,000 singing and dancing. Security issues - none. Over crowding - none. The only thing may be larger maps devilling where everything is but you know what - on an event that scale you ain't going to get everything spot on.
Then we have IronMan Melbourne. The interesting aspect and element is being supported by the State Government of Victoria - highlights the dedication they have for events, which they do. Every weekend an event organised by the council is on and if it ain't supported its sponsored and if it ain't sponsored its supported. The events industry is thriving and the demand is great. From one weekend of music, dance and culture to Ironman in 30 degree heat...
Then the major events - The Cricket World Cup, Australian Open and other major things - oh yeah the Formula One! In itself sounds impressive. Even more impressive - it all happened with one month of each and guess what the city just went smoothly. Why? Because professionals were delivered and this in returns keeps people happy!
Australian Open - being in the court was amazing. Seeing the tennis was amazing but helping delivering - well that was even more amazing. It was a full on contract and event but it was very rewarding. These events are not for everyone to work on but they are challenging. Long hours, lack of end but the most rewarding part when people share there happy memories and you know you were part of making that happen.
I could show you hundreds of photos and tell you millions of stories but here was just a flavour. To see the AFL Grand Final was amazing. To see the Cricket World Cup with 100,000 cricket fans turning up to the final and watching the Cricket in 36 degree fun - was more than just outstanding, it was amazing to think all these events where in the same place - the same 20KM of the city.
Thank you Melbourne for showing the world how to produce and create successful events.
