Hermes to hire 10,500 due to e-commerce surge
As locked down Brits turn to online shopping for their retail therapy needs, it’s no surprise that courier companies like Hermes are increasing their headcount by 10,500 people to keep up to the high demand in 2020.
With Hermes announcing this week they are investing £100 million in a bid to meet the increase in e-commerce shops, chief executive Martijn de Lange has stated “the pandemic has expedited the already phenomenal growth of online shopping and we see no sign of this changing,”.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, retail is being impacted dramatically around the globe. According to the Q1 Shopping Index, the number of unique digital shoppers in the UK rose 17 per cent year-over-year, with an increase of 15 per cent in digital traffic.
Since the UK government ordered the closing of all non-essential businesses on March 26, consumers have changed their methods of purchasing drastically by shifting to online shopping.
During this period, we have seen many unique methods that businesses are using to adapt to their customers virtual needs across the UK.
In the food industry alone we’ve seen meal kit companies like HelloFresh posting a global revenue increase of 66.4% due to their high demand and businesses like Ocado stating their switch to online shopping is permanent.
Flexibility and building up digital connections with your customers will be key to weathering this uncertain time.
This is great news for those who have unfortunately lost their jobs or had their income affected!
