How LinkedIn is Helping Power the President's Tech Jobs Initiative

The technology revolution has upended industries and career paths at an unprecedented pace. Economic transitions that once took centuries (think agrarian to industrial) or decades (think industrial to information), are now taking place over only a handful of years. The acceleration of technological advancement, notwithstanding the positive impact it achieved, has also caused significant disruptions across the workforce. We know that this is the case, for example, in New York, where there's growing demand in several industries for IT skills that did not exist and weren't in demand just a few years ago.

Today, President Obama announced the TechHire Initiative, a program and a call to action for communities across the country to embrace and promote innovative programs for training Americans for tomorrow's jobs. By some estimates, there are 500,000 tech jobs available in the US, many of which could be done by individuals who don't have four-year college degrees in computer science or other equivalent degrees. Instead, these jobs can be filled by individuals who train up quickly in technology bootcamps and other innovative educational programs that provide workers with skills in months rather than years.

At LinkedIn we're proud to be participating in and supporting the TechHire initiative. LinkedIn will draw from its Economic Graph data and work with interested communities to help job seekers decide where to focus their skills development, training providers align IT training with employer needs, and community partners focus on the jobs that are most in-demand. LinkedIn will also work in support of the TechHire initiative to find better ways to connect talent to training programs and job seekers to employers. And we look forward to working with others in the tech community to generate more data insights and create new tools to help prepare individuals for tomorrow's jobs.

We look forward to participating in this and other efforts to create economic opportunity for the global workforce.

I think this is a move in the "Right Direction". My only concern would be how do you baby boomers that haven't retired yet to believe in this Initiative?
