Man Who Sent City Manager a Death Threat Given Maximum Sentence
Over the last couple of years we have been talking about how local government is getting more toxic and divisive. One Michigan manager and other city officials received death threats and the perpetrator is getting jail time.
Two city managers turn down pay raises and two others leave their jobs less than six months in. One Florida city manager bravely endures a roast all in the name of charity and one of the largest cities in America is ending its relationship with Flock Safety .
All that and much more in this week's news roundup sponsored by the American Association of Municipal Executives job board. It is FREE to post your executive and senior level public sector recruitments and just $199 if you would like to include the listing in this newsletter.
MI: Man who threatened Cadillac city manager, mayor given maximum sentence
Andrew Moore was sentenced to a year in jail after pleading no contest to four charges related to threatening messages sent to multiple Cadillac officials, including city manager Marcus Peccia.
He wrote: “… you’ll be lucky if one scary night someone don’t come to your home and pull you from your sleep and pull you to the streets and put a bullet in your head…”
Peccia said the idea of someone wanting to pull him and his wife out of bed and execute them while the community watches has led to numerous sleepless nights, stress and anxiety.
“Words have meaning,” Peccia said, “and have consequences.”
FL: Sold Out Crowd Enjoys Marco Island City Manager Roast
Marco Island City Manager Mike McNees, who recently turned 70, courageously sat through a roast in a bid to raise funds for the Arts Center Theatre.
Read the article to check out some of the funny barbs aimed at Mike. My favorite quip was uttered by former councilman Jared Grifoni, referencing his assistant city manager.
"Casey Lucius is here,” Grifoni said. "Casey, thanks for taking the time away from doing Mike's job for him to be here."
WA: Sunnyside Feud Escalates as City Manager Mike Gonzalez Placed on Leave Pending Investigation
I recently highlighted Mike Gonzalez' decision to shut down city hall to process a backlog of public information requests, with more than 60 of them being submitted by one of his councilmembers, Theresa Hancock.
He filed a complaint against Hancock alleging she was engaged in a campaign of harassment and now the council has voted 5-2 to place him on leave while they "investigate."
A citizen group appears to be taking steps to begin a recall effort against Hancock. Stay tuned...
