This month’s updates from the US, UK and Europe

Welcome back to the Battery Asset Management Newsletter — your monthly digest of what’s happening in the world of battery asset operations.

While much of the industry pauses for summer, battery asset management continues to evolve. This month, we turn our attention to developments across the US, UK and Europe, where community relations, long-duration storage, and strategic clarity are emerging as key themes in performance and project success.

US Market: Community Engagement Moves to the Forefront

“To us, community engagement is a fundamental principle. We’re going into these communities as guests initially, and then our goal is to be long-term participants in the community.” — Kevin Smith, CEO, Arevon Energy

As deployment ramps up, community engagement is becoming a critical success factor for BESS developers in the US. Local concerns, particularly around fire safety and emergency planning, are shaping permitting and project timelines.

For asset managers and developers alike, building long-term trust at the community level is now as important as technical readiness — particularly in regions where opposition to large-scale infrastructure is growing.

UK Market: Long Duration Storage Gains Momentum

Gore Street Energy Storage Fund has announced plans to sell pre-construction assets in order to finance battery upgrades, signalling a strategic shift from 1-hour to 2-hour systems across their operational portfolio.

Research from Alexa Capital shows that long-duration energy storage (LDES) assets can access 37% higher revenues in today’s market conditions — a compelling case for retrofitting. This move aligns with the UK’s new cap-and-floor support mechanism for LDES, introduced by Ofgem in April 2025, which is already shaping investment decisions across the sector.

EU Market: Strategic Positioning Drives Performance

“The difference between average and exceptional performance isn't just technical, it's strategic.” — Leading asset manager

Gore Street’s recent shareholder actions highlight the rising importance of lifecycle optimisation and clear positioning in competitive markets.

Elsewhere in Europe, Portugal’s €400 million grid and storage investment plan, announced in the wake of the Iberian blackout, signals renewed government support. At the same time, new financing structures are unlocking large-scale deployments across previously underserved regions — giving strategic players a clear edge.
