My Aspirational Journey to the Boardroom: Reflections from Board Stewardship's First Mumbai Conclave

The path to becoming an Independent Director is a journey of self-discovery and strategic planning. For me, it's about understanding myself a bit more each day, deciding where I want to go, and then making a plan—unlike some who have a plan first and then decide the destination. This approach has been both challenging and rewarding.

My candid introduction to the world of boardrooms was facilitated by @Dr. Abhitabh Gupta, who introduced me to Vikesh Wallia Sir. Since then, there's been no looking back. Their guidance has been invaluable, and I am eternally grateful.

Recently, I was deeply honored to receive an invitation to the inaugural session of Board Stewardship in Mumbai. It was an event that promised—and delivered—insights, inspiration, and invaluable networking opportunities.

A Gathering of Minds and Hearts

The event was a confluence of brilliant minds dedicated to the cause of robust and sustainable board governance. I was thrilled to meet my favorite mentor and guide, Dr Chandra Mauli Dwivedi Sir and wish him a Happy International Men's Day in person. Being amidst such esteemed professionals, who are passionate about creating sturdier boardrooms in the global corporate world, was an enriching experience.

Empowering and Emotional Addresses

The inaugural address by Vikesh Wallia was both empowering and emotional. It reminded us that our passion can drive us to make significant impacts. Shailesh Haribhakti [GCB.D] Sir's address further inspired us, and my aspirations to contribute as a board member have only grown stronger after attending such sessions.

Insightful Sessions and Thought-Provoking Discussions

Rajeev Peshawaria 's session was particularly impactful, providing data and facts about global boardrooms, focus areas, and emphasizing the importance of sustainability. This was followed by Helle Bank Jørgensen, GCB.D, NACD.DC session, which was inspiring, especially coming from a diverse global leader.

The fireside chat was engaging and left us wanting more until we broke for lunch. Post-lunch, @Sunil Puri’s session kept us captivated with data and insights about Indian corporate boards.

Addressing Sustainability and Social Impact

One of the most relevant topics discussed was climate change and environmental sustainability, moderated by @Anirban Ghosh. The panel included @Mr. Rupam Baruah, Roopa Satish, and @Sudhir Hoshing, who raised several pertinent points. Ms. @Roopa Satish, in particular, highlighted the distinction between CSR and sustainability initiatives, which was enlightening.

My favorite topic, however, was driving Social Impact and Corporate Responsibility through Board Leadership. This session featured a powerful trio of speakers, including my mentor Madam Seemantinee Khot . It was nostalgic to recall her training during our IOD Masterclass. @Shalini Singhs expertise on global boards and Madam Sarita Bahl 's views provided us with numerous key takeaways.

A Grateful Heart and a Forward Look

"Do well by Doing Good." This phrase encapsulates the ethos of the conclave and resonates deeply with my personal and professional values.

I also want to extend hearty congratulations to Muralidharan Ramachandran for being recognized as a Fellow. Meeting new board leaders and sharing this journey with them was incredibly rewarding.

In conclusion, the Board Stewardship's first Mumbai conclave was a milestone in my journey as an aspiring Independent Director. It provided me with deeper insights, valuable connections, and a renewed sense of purpose. I am grateful to the LinkedIn community for providing a platform to share my successes, milestones, and moments.
