ONLINE AD FRAUD: HOW LARGE IS THE PROBLEM?
To get to the bottom of this topic, I have studied all the available materials that are available and used 5 different sources to conclude that more than 50% of online media spend goes to online advertising fraud.
Basically there are three kinds of fraud:
- impression fraud
- click fraud
- conversion fraud
In terms of motivations, there are four kinds:
- publisher motivated
- criminally motivated
- politically motivated
- advertiser motivated
The subject matter can be dissected in many other ways as well, some of which I will discuss in a future article.
While it seems fair to assume the total size of the online ad fraud problem is in tens of billions of dollars, that is only the beginning of it.
