Sad News! TCS Lay off 12000 People! But...

Why is this happening?

TCS CEO Kritivasan said in a statement - “This is not because of AI giving some 20 per cent productivity gains. This is driven by where there is a skill mismatch or where we think we have not been able to deploy someone,” .. “Some people, especially at senior levels, find it difficult to transition to tech-heavy roles,” Now what does that say about you?

From my eyes, TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL - they are those companies who hire people from Tier 2/Tier 3 colleges and cities and give chances to freshers when no other big companies come forward! They employ a huge workforce and help a lot of freshers with their entry level jobs!

But why layoffs are done every year in that huge number?

Even after re-skilling, and spending huge training budget per year they have to layoff so many employees?

Obviously 1 main reason is global economic and less business in certain fiscal.. but what other reason?

I have been saying for over a decade now, that you need to upskill, reskill yourself every year or so.. you need to invest learning new technologies every 180-365 days once.

This way you can always stay relevant, outgrow your present teams.. and stay sharp!

I have seen people working at 5-12 LPA in India, and still have no understanding of core concepts of BGP, MPLS, SDWAN.. and if they are working in security at similar package then they are just helping with tickets, troubleshooting, monitoring but not with any core domain job.

To stay in the domain for a long run I recommend following practices:

  • If you are new to the domain and have 0-3 years of experience, you should have very good knowledge of CCNA, CCNP Routing Switching which is now Enterprise.
  • If you are already in the domain, and have 2-5 years of experience, you should know in-depth about your field.. if you are in networking - should be aware about SDWAN, Wireless, Network Automation basics, if you are in security then you should be aware about SISE, PaloAlto/Checkpoint, FTD and Cyber security.. similarly if you are in Data CEnter then Nexus, ACI, VxLan and more.. and same for your respective domain..
  • If you are 4-8 years experienced, you should as per 2025-2026 have indepth knowledge, and understanding of above points rather than just being aware about them.. and you should start moving towards Python, CCNA Automation, CCNP Automation, DevOps for Network Engineers, AWS Understanding, Ansible, Terraform, GIT .. and also you should start taking overview of GenAI for Network Engineers.

Another question comes, will these technologies be able to help me for next 10 years?

No idea! What has happened in past 4-5 years has been a drastic change, but yes, they will help you stay relevant for next 4-5 years and then you can revisit and reskill again in 2027-2028-2029 with trending technologies.. You will always have a new thing coming every 2-3 years now!

To learn any of the above technology with my company PyNet Labs - feel free to message here on WhatsApp at https://wa.link/0ot595 or you can email us at hello@pynetlabs.com

If this is happening then there is no need to blame Ambani (Reliance), who has already done this a year ago.

Absolutely agree that roles evolve and we must evolve too. It's not just about being lazy or not sometimes even top performers get laid off due to budget cuts, Al shifts, or company restructuring. Yes, we should keep upgrading ourselves, but companies also need to create space for that growth and not just expect people to "figure it out."

The surge in AI and automation has led to rising layoffs, especially at mid-senior levels, despite these technologies being unable to fully replace human interaction and basic troubleshooting. Organizations should focus on upskilling employees in line with Industry 4.0 rather than cutting talent—even top performers. Job security builds trust and boosts productivity, while unchecked layoffs harm morale. It's also worth questioning why top leadership roles often remain unaffected. Companies should explore cost-saving alternatives like reducing unnecessary events, travel, and infrastructure expenses instead of impacting human capital.
