TikTok now promotes videos for extended periods - here's how to take advantage of it

TikTok has introduced a significant algorithm update, changing the game for content creators. How should you adapt? What type of content should you focus on? How can you maximize your subscriber growth?

These changes aren’t minor tweaks; they determine which creators will succeed and which will fade into obscurity. Some users have gained over 140,000 followers in just a few months, while others have exceeded 220,000. The best part? Even with a small following, you can start earning from your videos.

TikTok in 2025 presents the greatest growth potential we’ve ever seen. But only if you understand how the new algorithm operates.

Change #1: Content Relevance

The most crucial rule of TikTok’s updated algorithm is that video views depend on audience interest in specific topics.

Previously, content on any topic had a chance to go viral. Now, TikTok prioritizes subjects that are trending in real-time. If your chosen topic lacks demand, your video won’t get significant reach.

How to check topic potential:

  • Open TikTok on your desktop and use the search function on the "For You" page.
  • Search for a topic (e.g., "PepeCoin"). If the latest videos are several days old, the topic isn’t trending.

Article content

  • Compare with a broader topic (e.g., "Bitcoin"). If you see multiple fresh videos with high views (16,000 to 130,000), it's a strong content opportunity.

Article content

  • Use keyword suggestions to find niche trends (e.g., "Bitcoin 2025 prediction"). If it has high engagement, it's a viable topic.

If a topic doesn’t show recent high-engagement videos, move on until you find one with active viewership.

Change #2: Prioritized Content Formats

TikTok now boosts three specific content types, giving them a visibility advantage:

1. Videos over 1 minute

TikTok aims to become more like YouTube by promoting longer videos. Creators posting videos over one minute gain better ranking in search results and even receive financial incentives from the platform.

2. Green screen content

Videos using the green screen effect receive algorithmic preference. This format works well for:

  • Trending news and articles
  • Celebrity updates and major brand stories
  • Viral content from other platforms

Since it aligns with viewer interests, TikTok prioritizes these videos.

Article content

3. Carousel content (slideshows)

Some creators have gained over 415,000 subscribers in a month using simple carousel posts.

Article content

Slideshows with multiple images attract high engagement (130,000 to 7.5 million views). TikTok favors this format due to its ability to hold viewers’ attention longer.

Experiment with these three formats to enhance your content reach.

Change #3: Posting Frequency

More content doesn’t always mean better reach. TikTok now limits exposure if creators post excessively.

The new rule:

  • No more than three videos per day (except for TikTok Shop sellers)
  • Overposting can limit reach, as most niches don’t require high-frequency updates

Exception: If you promote products via TikTok Shop, frequent posts (up to 20 per day) can drive conversions. “Bottom-feeder” content, which targets people already interested in your product, performs well when offering:

  • Discounts
  • Short, repetitive promotional videos
  • Multiple variations of product demonstrations

For standard content, three daily posts strike the best balance between engagement and quality.

Change #4: Breaking the "Low Views" Barrier

If your videos stall at 200-300 views, it’s due to TikTok’s new 15-20 second engagement rule.

To reach a wider audience, videos must retain viewers for at least 15-20 seconds before getting further promotion.

Strategies for different video lengths:

  • For 1+ minute videos: A compelling hook increases watch time naturally, making longer content more advantageous.
  • For 5-15 second videos:

Longer content bypasses this engagement hurdle more effectively, and TikTok even rewards extended videos with better payouts.

Change #5: Prolonged Content Promotion

Perhaps the biggest change—TikTok now promotes videos for much longer periods.

Previously, most views occurred within 24-48 hours. Now, videos from months ago still appear in recommendations.

What this means for your strategy:

  1. SEO optimization is crucial
  2. Be patient

The 50/50 Content Strategy:

  • 50%: Evergreen content optimized for search longevity
  • 50%: Trend-driven content focusing on recent events and viral topics

This strategy ensures a steady stream of views while maximizing short-term viral opportunities.
