Wabi-Sabi” - Embracing the imperfections

Embracing the imperfections.

There is no room for mistakes. Success is never enough. You are constantly waiting for the “right” moment to strike while the iron is hot.

Can you relate with any of the traits above? Indeed, these are traits of a perfectionist. Achieving perfection is seen as the gold standard in today’s world.

The perfect body type. The perfect job. The perfect lifestyle.

In today’s world where success is celebrated and failure is penalized, unknowingly we fall into the trap of endless pursuit of “perfection. Undeniably, being a perfectionist helps one to achieve precise standards and becomes an overachiever. A big plus of perfectionism lays on the foundation of giving one’s best in everything one does.

However, perfectionists are also their own devils. At first glance, being a perfectionist seems perfect. Not only do you have a keen eye for details, you are ever ready to push yourself out of the comfort zone to achieve the next big thing. You always exceed expectations with the quality of your output. But, the downsides are not apparent until you take a step back to reflect upon your perfectionism and how it has been serving you.

Procrastination, having a distorted view of reality and deep seated unhappiness are some examples of perfectionism being a double-edged sword. If being abused, perfectionism can morph into a compulsive disorder, which in turn ruins your life and your well-being.

This brings me to the next point - is there any beauty in imperfections? “Wabi-Sabi” - a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection, has increasing becoming a popular idea for personal growth.

Imperfection is the fundamental principle of “Wabi-Sabi”. In today’s world, the relentless pursuit of perfection — in possessions, relationships, achievements — often results in excessive stress, anxiety, depression and judgment. And, this is where “Wabi-Sabi” invites a breather.

“Wabi-Sabi” is a different kind of mindset. It is the genuine acceptance of finding beauty in things as they are and building on what you already have in life. Imperfections in your learning, imperfections in your career, imperfections in your daily life.

Embracing “Wabi-Sabi” is about being compassionate with yourself, and improving on whatever that is — not feverishly trying to recreate yourself to pose as something else completely. This allows us to grow into a better person holistically. The practice of “Wabi-Sabi” gives you the permission to be yourself. To embrace the perfection of being imperfectly you to spur yourself for greater growth.

I think this is a very pragmatic approach to life. Everyone and everything has something beautiful in itself. If we can see this and embrace it, it will be the start of loving oneself which is essential to love others.
