Market commentary

PPA activity remained strong but showed signs of caution, with 27 deals recorded in February, slightly below last year’s count. Contracted capacity rose 168% month-on-month, led by Amazon ’s 1.1 GW purchase across Spain, Portugal, and the UK. Tesla and Zelestra signed a PPA for 57MW of Spanish solar.

Long-term deals are dominating, with most exceeding 10 years, including a record 40-year solar PPA in the UK. Despite a slight drop in prices from February, PPA rates remain about 8% higher year-on-year, reflecting steady demand.

European power prices surged due to high winter demand, weaker wind generation, and rising gas prices, with Germany’s spot price doubling year-on-year. Spain saw a sharp imbalance, as solar generation rose 22% while wind dropped nearly half, lowering solar capture rates. Estonia’s electricity price soared 69% after the Baltic power grid disconnected from Russia, further strained by an interconnector outage. Romania made strides in PPA growth as it prepared for GO market integration, signalling broader renewable expansion.
