Anthropic, in collaboration with the UK AI Security Institute and the Alan Turing Institute, found that a small number of malicious documents can create vulnerabilities in large language models (LLMs). The study revealed that just 250 poisoned documents can trigger a backdoor vulnerability, causing models to output gibberish when encountering specific phrases like "SUDO." This vulnerability was consistent across models of various sizes, including those with up to 13 billion parameters, challenging the assumption that larger models require more poisoned data.
