Earlier this week, STOA participated in the Annual Conference of the European Parliamentary Technology Assessment network (EPTA) in Paris for the release of the 2025 EPTA report on ‘Transforming the energy mix’⚡ 🇪🇺 MEP Ana Vasconcelos participated in the panel discussion on the technological consequences of the energy transition, highlighting that Europe’s energy transition is now a test of political will to speed up the deployment of key low-carbon technologies. The EU must modernise its 40 year-old power grid to turn clean power into competitive power: ➡️ invest in upgrading grids and interconnections, ➡️ integrate digital tools such as AI; ➡️ overcome market fragmentation. 20 EPTA members, including STOA, and associated members National Diet Library of Japan and US Government Accountability Office, contributed to the report which examines: structural shifts in national energy systems; emerging technological and industrial challenges; public perception and societies’ capacity to manage the social costs andbenefits of the energy transition. 📄 Read the 2025 EPTA report ‘Transforming the energy mix’ 👉 https://lnkd.in/eVr2j-NP

Wouldn’t it be great to access news from abroad in your own language?🗞️🌍 A recent STOA study explored the possibility of creating a European news streaming platform that uses AI-powered translation to provide subtitles in all official EU languages. This would provide citizens access to news from across the EU without any language barriers. In our latest ESMH article, the authors of the STOA study Dr. Konrad Bleyer-Simon and Dr. Jan Erik Kermer, Ph.D. discuss the potential of such a platform to transform how EU citizens access information, promote media pluralism, combat misinformation, and foster a sense of shared European identity 🇪🇺 📰 Read the ESMH article to learn more about the benefits of a ‘European News Streaming Platform’ 👉 https://wp.me/panTdn-4oi 🔗 Discover the STOA studies: https://europa.eu/!fmjdWr & https://lnkd.in/eZZtTGQz Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom (CMPF), Christian Ehler

How can we guarantee that European researchers have stable and secure access to the data and resources they need to conduct their work, free from political or other interference? 🗂💻 🌐 This question was at the heart of today’s STOA workshop on European data sovereignty in research, hosted by MEPs Christian Ehler and Lina Gálvez Muñoz who underlined the importance of this discussion in the current geopolitical climate which puts data sovereignty at risk. Stakeholders, experts and policymakers addressed how to reduce dependence on non-EU databases, improve data access and resilience, and safeguard academic freedom and innovation: ◾ Establish and support independent European databases and research infrastructures, and ensure stable data interfaces (APIs) for text-mining; ◾ Implement FAIR principles (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) and support European initiatives such as the European Open Science Cloud; ◾ Diversify and de-centralise data infrastructure and storage, promoting openness & pluralism and open access publishing; ◾ Foster scientific collaboration through data sharing and international cooperation on global data governance. With the valuable insights from Prof. Thomas Hartung from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Klaus Tochtermann Director of the EOSC Association, European Commission’s Signe Ratso, Prof. Els Lefever of Ghent University, and Anastase - Alexandre Charantonis from Inria. 📺 Rewatch the event: https://lnkd.in/e65ywX7J 👉 Read the interview with Prof. Thomas Hartung: https://wp.me/panTdn-4n0 #EP4AcademicFreedom #DataSovereignty #OpenScience #OpenAccess #EUResearch #EUInnovation
