  • Well done to colleagues at Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce for hosting a successful trade mission to Boston last week. Huge thanks to our GlobalScots and Scottish Development International colleagues on the ground in Boston for their support in preparing companies to hit the ground running, delivering key elements of the programme and showing up to fly the flag for innovative and ambitious Scottish companies. Last week, we took eight Scottish businesses to Boston for a trade mission designed to strengthen international connections and explore opportunities for collaboration. The visit included a market briefing, site visits, and meetings with Scottish Development International and the City of Boston. Delegates also took part in B2B meetings and a networking event with Venture Café, creating valuable connections with Global Scots, local businesses, and universities. The mission was a fantastic opportunity to showcase Scotland’s innovation and ambition on the global stage – and we’re excited to see what partnerships and projects will grow from it.

“I think companies would be surprised by the willingness of GlobalScots to put their hands up. Influential business people from all over the world have signed up to be GlobalScot because they want to help. From an altruistic perspective, they want to give back in some way. They may have benefited from the network themselves, and they want to be able to reciprocate that. “It’s a low-risk way of getting some excellent professional industry advice on whatever topic you can find, whether it be market entry, financial, or legal, it's all there to tap into. “Even if it's just a half hour conversation with someone to point you in the right direction or to set you up with another follow-on call, GlobalScot support is available at the click of a button and it's completely free.” Jamie MacDonald, Integration Manager at Venterra Group has has helped dozens of Scottish companies during his three years of being a GlobalScot. • "Ukraine offers many business opportunities and now is the right time for Scottish companies to be seeding relationships".... this was the resounding feedback from GlobalScots last week, after meeting a delegation of Ukrainian companies in Edinburgh to discuss Scotland-Ukraine trade potential. Our GlobalScots had volunteered their time to support the Rebirth of Ukraine mission, and they were inspired both by the growth ambition of these companies as they continue to thrive in spite of the war, and their enthusiasm for partnering with Scottish companies across key sectors including: 🔵food & agriculture 🟡renewables 🔵oil & gas 🟡medical, prosthetics & rehabilitation 🔵creative & digital 🟡building 🔵housing and planning With a strong GlobalScot endorsement of the opportunity in Ukraine, we’re pleased to be supporting a new webinar next week, which will help Scottish companies understand more about how to do business in Ukraine, what type of live projects are available and the support on offer. This event is organised by BDO in Ukraine, with the support of the The Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise, the Consulate of Ukraine in Edinburgh, the Cross-Party Group on Ukraine, Nazovni.online and Global Business for Ukraine. Today, we are sharing with you a Letter to Scotland from Ross Hunter, one of our GlobalScots based in the USA, and founder and chairman of Copylab Ltd, about opportunities to do business in the US. 🌍 America is Still Open For Business 🌍 “America’s burning, the market is tanking, we’re all doomed!” Scroll the headlines and that is the mood music. Look up from the screen and the picture changes fast. The S&P is off barely five percent year-to-date, still ten percent higher than a year ago and almost double its level five years back. Boston’s restaurants are jammed on Friday nights, the airport is humming, conference halls are buzzing. Yes, tariffs will sting import-reliant manufacturers and retailers, and federal contract delays are real. But financial and professional services, biotech and higher-ed – the engines of this city – are still running hot. 📈 America is complicated, not comatose. My GlobalScot calendar proves it. Twenty Scottish life sciences firms are coming to BIO 2025 in June and we are lining up relevant opportunities to connect before they arrive. I’m working with the Scottish Development International team and FinTech Scotland to explore opportunities to attend Boston Fintech Week in October. And two Glasgow companies I met on my last visit back in February already have tangible wins: one now has a solution for its US banking setup problem, another met prospective clients and partners though my GlobalScot intro. Why does that matter? Because, amid tariff talk and post-election noise, US buyers still ask a single question: do I trust this partner to deliver? What does that mean for Scottish companies: how can they demonstrate trust? In many ways. It’s easy – show up prepared, answer quickly, offer proof in the first meeting and commit to this market. To widen our reach, a group of Boston-based GlobalScots has come together to form a GlobalScot Regional Advisory Group to support companies to enter this market. We aim to be a single front door for Scottish leaders in life sciences, fintech (and FS more broadly), or indeed any venture that sees Boston as the right beachhead. We bring networks, insight and – just as importantly – the willingness to answer the phone when you land at Logan Airport with a head full of possibilities. Opportunity rarely waits for perfect conditions. America is open. The only question is whether you are ready to walk through the door. 🔔 Give us a bell. We’re busy – and that is exactly how we like it. Today GlobalScots in Boston collaborated with Mark Beaumont and Andrew McNeill of Eos to learn more from the experiences of Scottish companies on their US market entry. We heard from two ambitious Scottish companies, both exemplars of Scottish health innovation, as they build bridges across the Atlantic.  This was a fantastic spotlight on scaling innovation, so it was great to hear about the companies’ journeys and in particular to hear the impact that Scottish Enterprise and GlobalScot support has had in helping them to scale and grow; and how GlobalScots can do more to support these companies and more like them. Thank you to Rowan Armstrong of Bioliberty and Matthew J. Baker of Dxcover for your engaging presentations, we're excited to hear what is next in store for you.
