We’re proud to announce that Heidelberg Materials UK will build the UK’s first carbon capture plant for cement at our Padeswood works in North Wales. With HyNet now approved to move into construction. Cement is essential to modern life 🏗️, but also one of the hardest-to-abate industries. Carbon capture at Padeswood will permanently lock away CO₂ that cannot otherwise be eliminated. Congratulations Heidelberg Materials UK 👏
It’s all systems go on our world-leading Padeswood CCS project! 🎉 We’ve reached a FID (Final Investment Decision) with the UK Government to build a carbon capture facility at our Padeswood works in north Wales, which will be the first in the world to enable fully decarbonised cement production 🌎 We’re so excited to share this fantastic news, which has been four years in the making. It’s a huge milestone for our business, the industry and the UK, and marks a new era in sustainable cement production. We will start construction later this year and be able to produce evoZero carbon captured net zero cement for the construction industry in 2029. ENCYCLIS is proud to deliver one of the UK’s first carbon capture plants from energy-from-waste ♻️ With the green light 🟢 now given, construction 🚧 can begin on infrastructure that will capture and lock away CO₂ emissions. This will be the first time in the UK that CO₂ from energy recovery is permanently stored, a blueprint for the future.
CONFIRMED: Encyclis and UK Government sign landmark agreement to develop UK’s first full-scale carbon capture project for Energy-from-Waste 🔵 UK’s first full-scale carbon capture plant at an Energy-from-Waste facility to be developed at Encyclis’ Protos EfW facility in Cheshire, preventing the release of around 370,000 tonnes of CO2 per year – creating a blueprint for the decarbonisation of waste 🔵 Captured CO2 from Protos Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) will be transported via pipeline for permanent and secure storage in depleted gas reservoirs in Liverpool Bay 🔵 Project is supported by the Department for Energy Security and Net zero as part of Government’s £21.7bn investment in UK carbon capture, which is set to create thousands of jobs between now and 2050. A huge step forward for HyNet! 🎉 HyNet has reached its latest major milestone with the green light to begin construction of the UK’s first carbon capture plants to lock up CO₂ from industry. For the first time, CO₂ from the production of cement 🧱 and from a plant creating low carbon energy-from-waste ♻️ will be captured and locked away. Heidelberg Materials UK and ENCYCLIS have signed agreements with Department for Energy Security and Net Zero to: 💷Commit major investment 🤝Finalise contracts with suppliers 🚧Begin construction of the new plants “With investment committed and construction approved, our partners can now start building the infrastructure to cut carbon dioxide emitted from both cement production and producing energy by processing waste. Decarbonisation is about more than reducing emissions. It’s about building a stronger, more sustainable future for our industrial heartlands.” 👷♂️Protecting high-quality jobs 💼 Creating new roles 🔗 Strengthening local supply chains 📈 Supporting regional growth #CarbonCapture #CCS #Sustainability #EnergyTransition #cement #wastetoenergy
Padeswood is set to become the UK’s first carbon capture cement plant, tackling one of the world’s toughest decarbonisation challenges. At the same time, the Protos waste to energy facility in Cheshire is set to break new ground as one of the world’s first of its kind to use carbon capture technology. Both projects are possible thanks to our £9.4 billion investment in carbon capture at the Spending Review. Together, these projects will: 🔹 Support 500 skilled clean energy jobs 🔹 Remove 1.2 million tonnes of CO₂ every year 🔹 Showing how traditional industries can lead the clean transition Cement and waste-to-energy production are carbon-intensive industries and have no viable route to cut emissions without carbon capture. These are not just construction projects. They are proof that the UK can reindustrialise around clean technologies, creating lasting opportunities for working people and tackling the climate crisis.
