Bringing useful quantum computing to the world.

About us

IBM Quantum leads the world in quantum computing, a technology we believe will power the next step in computing as a whole. In 2016, we made history by putting the first quantum processor in the cloud, enabling anyone to run experiments on quantum hardware. Since then, not only have we built the world's largest quantum computing community—with more than 400,000 users exploring this nascent technology through IBM Quantum cloud services and tools like Qiskit Runtime—but we've also established the world's largest quantum workforce. Now, with a quantum fleet comprising 20+ of the world's most powerful quantum systems, IBM Quantum aims to transform society's most challenging problems into valuable opportunities. As part of our work toward that goal, we are committed to fostering a truly global quantum economy. Quantum leaps in Spain, tiny AI in space, and steerable LLMs. A busy week in Research! The Basque Country and IBM celebrate the launch of Europe’s first IBM Quantum System Two in San Sebastián, providing researchers with direct access to advanced quantum hardware. Scientists are already using the system to simulate strong nuclear force interactions, expanding the frontier of condensed matter physics. In parallel, IBMNASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and European Space Agency - ESA open-sourced lightweight versions of Prithvi and TerraMind Earth observation models, 120 times smaller than their larger predecessors. These compact models maintain high performance and can run on devices like smartphones and satellites, enabling real-time environmental analysis in the field. To improve the safety and controllability of generative AI, we introduced AISteer360, a modular toolkit that allows users to steer large language model behavior efficiently. It offers lightweight methods for customizing output style and content safety, complementing IBM’s broader AI governance tools. Read on and subscribe for more updates across IBM Research. 👇

Congratulations to Sarah Sheldon and Andrew Cross on their election as 2025 Fellows of the American Physical Society: https://lnkd.in/eUmiWzRW Dr. Sheldon is the 2025 recipient of the Forum on Industrial and Applied Physics Fellowship, recognized for her seminal contributions to the realization and application of practical quantum computing. Her work has advanced gate calibration for superconducting qubits, developed techniques for characterizing quantum devices, and extended the capabilities of current quantum systems. Her team now focuses on creating novel algorithms and applications for quantum computing that will be accessible in the near term. Dr. Cross receives the 2025 Division of Quantum Information Fellowship for his foundational advancements in quantum error correction and fault-tolerant quantum computing, his practical implementation of error correction protocols, and his open-source contributions to essential frameworks and software tools. His research in quantum error correction, fault-tolerant architectures, and quantum circuit simulation has been essential to the progress we have made. I recall many long and thoughtful conversations with both Sarah and Andrew about quantum computing, and they both truly deserve this recognition.

We traveled to the Basque Country this week for a wonderful event unveiling Europe’s first IBM Quantum System Two, which is now operational at the IBM-Euskadi Quantum Computational Center in San Sebastian, Gipuzkoa, Spain: https://lnkd.in/edsde576. This milestone positions the Basque Country as a global leader in quantum computing, and is just the latest example of how our partners at the Basque Quantum Initiative (BasQ) are continually demonstrating their commitment to advancing science, technology, and innovation. Real quantum computers can speed up scientific discovery of quantum algorithms and applications, and with an IBM Quantum System Two powered by two 156-qubit Heron chips, the European quantum community has gained a powerful new tool for scientific discovery. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this week’s event and helped make it such a success. It was a pleasure to talk with Imanol Pradales Gil about the future and the opportunities for us to partner and build together.

The BasQ–IBM research team is already delivering breakthroughs in high-energy physics, time crystals, and quantum algorithm development. One ongoing project uses IBM quantum computers to explore the mathematical foundations of the strong nuclear force—the same force that binds atomic nuclei. Traditionally, studying strong force interactions has required massive particle colliders like those at CERN. Now, researchers from IBM and BasQ are working to overcome the limits of classical computing by simulating quark interactions on quantum hardware. In this video, we visualize how researchers model quarks as they move, bend, oscillate, and spread across the lattice of an IBM Quantum Heron chip.
