Real-time data from Indeed shows federal workers' job application activity has been elevated as the federal government remains shut down. This data will be updated consistently throughout the shutdown.

Seasonal work is still out there, but it’s not as easy to come by as it was a few years ago. The level of searches related to seasonal work is far above levels seen immediately before and after the pandemic. But while searches have soared, the number of seasonal jobs available has not.

“We’re continuing to see this low-hire, low-fire environment,” Indeed economist Laura Ullrich told CBS MoneyWatch, describing a market where openings have slowed and sidelined workers struggle to re-enter. She warned that long-term unemployment, now at its highest level in more than three years, risks pushing people out of the labor force entirely. The share of US job postings mentioning training programs rose from 3.4% in January 2018 to 8.1% in August 2025. These explicit training opportunities are unevenly distributed across occupations: they cluster in jobs requiring lower education, experience, and wages, as well as jobs with lower AI exposure and adoption.

“The labor market is frozen, [like] a deer in the headlights,” Indeed economist Allison Shrivastava told The Washington Post, pointing to the uncertainty shaping today’s hiring landscape. She explained that while workers are holding onto their jobs, those trying to switch roles or enter the market are finding fewer opportunities.
