Education legal experts don't foresee a significant uptick in lawsuits in the long term as a result of the U.S. Supreme Court’s A.J.T. v. Osseo ruling regarding disability discrimination in schools. But the experts recommend school districts take several steps to ensure they don’t become vulnerable to civil rights claims for monetary damages related to supports and services for students with disabilities. That includes preventing discriminatory practices through training sessions about disability-related policies and practices, as well as addressing problems as soon as they are known. #StudentsWithDisabilities #Section504 https://lnkd.in/ecXxp6dX

The Trump administration said it wants to consolidate some special education grants in fiscal year 2026 that serve different purposes so states and districts have more spending flexibility. But those opposed to the plan say this design would remove guaranteed funding for certain programs because it would be each state’s decision to fund those. Overall, the FY 26 budget proposal provides level funding for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act at $15.5 billion. Here's what supporters and opponents say about how the special education budget plan could improve or hurt services for students with disabilities. #SpecialEducation #SchoolFunding https://lnkd.in/eyV-ebTS

U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon testified before the Senate Tuesday, defending the White House's fiscal year 2026 budget that proposes a 15% cut to the U.S. Department of Education. Her top priority: improving literacy. But some lawmakers were skeptical given the proposed reductions. McMahon also answered questions about spending recommendations for the Office for Civil Rights, mental health, college access and the status of this fiscal year's distributions. #SchoolFinance #Education https://lnkd.in/ej2ysErX

School shootings in 2024 dipped slightly from the year before, but the 330 school shootings recorded last year still mark the second-highest number since 1966. The 2024 count fell only 19 below the all-time high of 349 incidents recorded in 2023, according to the K-12 School Shooting Database. In fact, the highest number of annual school shootings over the past six decades came in 2021-2024, according to the database. That’s despite increased efforts to harden schools with cameras and weapons detection systems, as well as bolster resources to address students’ emotional and mental well-being. #SchoolSafety
