  • The numbers are in: By 2030, 59% of the global workforce will need new digital skills for the AI economy. It’s time we put a stake in the ground and meet the moment. Earlier this week, we launched Microsoft Elevate and the AI Economy Institute, designed to ensure people, not just technology, are at the center of progress. Microsoft Elevate is about more than technology and skilling—it’s about empowering changemakers, communities, and countries to shape the future of AI with confidence and clarity. The AI Economy Institute will lead independent research to help societies adapt to the economic and social transformations of AI. • Large Language Models (LLMs) power today’s AI—but most are trained on English. With over 200 languages, Europe’s rich linguistic and cultural diversity is still missing from the data. AI that doesn’t understand European languages, histories, and values can't fully serve its people or economy. As part of our European Digital Commitments, Microsoft is working to close this gap by: ➡️ Expanding the availability of multilingual data and supporting AI training efforts in local languages. ➡️ Partnering with organizations like Hugging Face and Common Crawl Foundation to make multilingual data broadly accessible. ➡️ Funding projects that unlock digital content in 10 underrepresented European languages like Estonian, Cypriot, and Slovak. ➡️ Sharing the knowledge, tools, and capabilities to empower European developers to create local AI models. ➡️ Working with communities to ethically source and annotate data, so AI reflects people’s realities and not just algorithms. By expanding multilingual data access, we’re helping build AI language models that work for everyone in Europe and empower innovation, inclusion, and growth across the continent. https://msft.it/6049sypRx

    • Infographic titled 'The AI language divide' highlighting the disparity in web content by language. It states that English makes up 50% of web content while being the first language of only 5% of the global population, and many EU languages represent less than 0.6%. It also notes that closing this language gap could increase intra-EU trade by up to €360 billion.
  • AI is reshaping how people learn, work, and live. As this transformation unfolds, the focus remains on expanding access, opportunity, and putting people first. Microsoft Elevate is donating $4 billion in AI technology to K-12 schools, community and technical colleges, and nonprofits and helping 20 million people earn AI credentials. Through partnerships with educators, nonprofits, and local governments, Microsoft Elevate is working to ensure that communities everywhere have the key tools to thrive in the AI economy. This edition of the Spotlight on AI newsletter highlights how Microsoft Elevate are advancing AI adoption through policy, training, and community-driven innovation.

  • Water is a vital resource is on the front lines of the climate crisis, and we’re taking bold steps to become water positive by 2030—restoring more than we use and investing in global solutions is one key pillar. Whether it’s rethinking how we cool our datacenters to minimize water use or partnering with communities to bring life back to critical watersheds, we’re pushing forward with smart, scalable ways to cut water use, and restore basins. Our progress so far: 💧 76 replenishment projects in water-stressed basins 💧 Over 100M cubic meters of water targeted for restoration Learn more about our impact: https://msft.it/6045sypuR

    • Bar graph titled 'Replenishing more water than we consume.' It shows Microsoft’s contracted water replenishment volumes from FY20 to FY24, increasing from 2.8 million cubic meters in FY20 to 50 million in FY24. A caption notes that since 2020, 76 projects have been contracted to replenish over 100 million cubic meters of water in stressed basins. • Every day, millions of people turn to the internet with questions about their health. AI can help turn those questions into answers—and those answers into better outcomes. That’s why we’re building clinically grounded AI systems like MAI-DxO, our Diagnostic Orchestrator. It’s designed to simulate how clinicians think through complex cases, bringing the power of collaborative diagnosis to every patient interaction. It’s a step toward a future where AI helps expand access to quality care, reduce diagnostic delays, and support clinicians around the world. This technology is not intended to replace physicians, but rather to empower healthcare professionals—giving them better tools, deeper insights, and more time to focus on patient care. By working alongside clinicians, AI can help doctors deliver even better care to every patient. • Through Microsoft TechSpark, we’re supporting nonprofit organizations like TechBuffalo that are building an AI-ready workforce in Buffalo, New York. From Family Code Night to PowerUpTech and TechConnect, TechBuffalo’s programs are designed to meet people where they are. That could be a student coding in Minecraft, a parent learning to code alongside their child, a college intern placed with a local employer, or a nonprofit beginning to use digital tools. Veterans are starting second careers. And classrooms across Buffalo are preparing for new programs that bring tech directly into teaching and learning. These efforts are creating new pathways into technology and expanding access to opportunity across the region. https://msft.it/6046s18S6

  • Microsoft Elevate is a new organization focused on putting people first. From the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the National Education Association (NEA), to Code.org , the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), these collaborations are opening doors for millions of learners and educators. Through Microsoft Elevate, we are supporting educators as they bring artificial intelligence into classrooms, equipping nonprofits with tools to expand digital access, and partnering with government agencies to advance workforce readiness. We are working to ensure no one is left behind as technology evolves. This is just the beginning. Together, we are building the infrastructure for opportunity in the artificial intelligence economy.

  • A new AI model trained to detect anomalies in breast MRI scans is learning to flag subtle changes, predict future risk, and support radiologists with clear, explainable insights. The model doesn’t just detect cancer with high accuracy, it shows radiologists exactly where to look. The result: fewer false positives, earlier interventions, and more equitable care. This isn’t about replacing human expertise, it’s about amplifying it. 👉 Read more from Juan M. Lavista Ferres: https://msft.it/6041sDQLx

  • Notre Dame is getting a digital twin thanks to AI. Microsoft will partner with the Ministère de la Culture and Iconem to create a digital replica of Paris’s newly restored, 862-year-old Gothic masterpiece. As part of our Culture AI initiative, we've helped digitally preserve heritage sites and moments since 2019—including Ancient Olympia in Greece, St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, and more. Through collaborations that combine cutting-edge AI technology with deep historical knowledge, our Culture AI initiative helps safeguard languages, landmarks, and artifacts via digital replicas and data collaboration. We’re expanding this work to ensure that Europe’s cultural richness is both represented and accessible for generations to come. AI that doesn’t understand Europe’s languages, histories, and values can’t fully serve its people, its businesses, or its future. That’s why, today in Paris, we’re deepening our commitment to Europe’s digital future with two new initiatives focused on making what’s uniquely European—its languages and culture—more open and accessible. https://lnkd.in/egjbBbyi
