The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) unveiled its Fusion Science & Technology (S&T) Roadmap: a comprehensive national plan to accelerate the path to commercial fusion energy by the mid-2030s. Developed with input from over 600 scientists, engineers, and industry partners, the roadmap defines DOE’s Build–Innovate–Grow strategy: 🔹 Build key infrastructure to close science and technology gaps. 🔹 Innovate using AI, advanced computing, and transformative research. 🔹 Grow through public-private partnerships, supply chains, and workforce development. Congratulations to Omar M. Yaghi at the University of California, Berkeley, who just received the 2025 #Nobel Prize in chemistry for work supported by the DOE's Office of Science! His research advanced the technology of metal-organic frameworks, which are crystals with large cavities inside of them. Gases and other chemicals can flow through these frameworks, enabling them to catalyze chemical reactions and store valuable gases. MOFs can also be used for harvesting water from desert air and even conducting electricity. The Department of Energy’s Office of Science has a long history of supporting his work, beginning in 1998. In addition to the Nobel Prize-winning research, he also served as an early director of the Molecular Foundry and has used the Advanced Light Source in his research, both DOE Office of Science user facilities at Berkeley Lab. Congratulations to John Clarke, a former senior scientist at Berkeley Lab, Michel Devoret at Yale University, and John M. Martinis at UC Santa Barbara for receiving the 2025 #Nobel Prize in physics! While scientists usually observe quantum mechanical properties on the smallest of scales, their research showed that these effects could be observed in a system that’s big enough to hold in your hand. Their work on quantum effects in superconductors that was supported by DOE’s Office of Science set the foundation for advances in quantum computers, cryptography, and sensors. Alchemists once promised to turn straw into gold. In real life, catalysts are amazing at enabling the chemical processes that turn one substance into another. Researchers at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and Berkeley Lab used powerful X-rays from the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (a DOE Office of Science User Facility) to watch copper acting as a catalyst.
