Every day, your patients may seem “normal,” yet subtle signs can reveal something hidden: 👉 Hesitant or fearful behaviour 👉 A companion who answers for them or restricts them 👉 Inconsistent personal information 👉 Unexplained eye injuries, repeated infections, or neglect of basic eye care As an optometrist, you’re in a unique position to notice patterns and cues others might miss. You’re not a detective, but your trauma-informed awareness, gentle questions, and empathy can create a rare safe moment. Sometimes, the first moment a victim has ever felt seen. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘆: ✅ Offer privacy, create a chance to speak alone ✅ Use open-ended, nonjudgmental questions ✅ Know your local reporting laws and referral options ✅ Provide discreet educational materials like hotline cards or posters Even small actions, noticing, listening, connecting someone to help, can make a life-changing difference. Your “secret agent” role isn’t about confrontation. It’s about awareness, compassion, and taking safe, informed action. Because sometimes, the most powerful intervention is simply being the first person who truly sees. #HumanTrafficking #Optometry #PatientSafety #TraumaInformedCare #PublicHealth #HealthcareAwareness #RedFlags #VerovianCares

  • 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝗳 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗶-𝗢𝗯𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗔𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗢𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵? Sounds surprising? We’re not making this up; research says it might be true. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄: 🔹 Tirzepatide vs. Semaglutide, No Major Difference in Eye Outcomes Patients on tirzepatide and semaglutide showed similar results for most eye conditions, including cataracts, dry eye, and eye movement issues. Neither medication stood out as better or worse. 🔹 Tirzepatide vs. Naltrexone/Bupropion, Lower Risk of Some Eye Problems 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗶𝗿𝘇𝗲𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗱: ✔️ About 50% lower risk of developing cataracts. ✔️ Roughly one-third lower risk of oculomotor dysfunction (eye movement problems). In short, tirzepatide performed better for eye health than some older weight-loss drugs. 🔹 Tirzepatide & Semaglutide vs. Older Drugs, Fewer Eye Issues Overall Compared to medications like phentermine or phentermine/topiramate, newer GLP-1 drugs were linked to fewer cases of: ✔️ Blurry vision ✔️ Visual disturbances ✔️ Dry eye disease (DED) 🔹 Results Held True for Higher BMI Patients Even when focusing only on individuals with BMI ≥ 30, the same trends appeared, suggesting these ocular benefits extend to those with more severe obesity.  𝗔 𝗙𝗲𝘄 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 🖊️ Lifestyle factors weren’t measured — diet, smoking, and exercise may have influenced results. 🖊️ Selection bias — doctors might prescribe specific drugs for certain patient types. 🖊️ Small tirzepatide sample size — it’s a newer drug, so less data is available. ICD-10 coding limitations — early or minor eye issues may have gone unrecorded. 𝗦𝗼, 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀? Not at all. 😄 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗙𝗶𝘁 𝗜𝗻 While optometrists and ophthalmologists won’t prescribe anti-obesity medications, they play a vital role in: ✔️ Patient education: Helping patients understand how systemic medications might influence eye health. ✔️ Collaboration: Partnering with GPs and endocrinologists to monitor ocular effects in patients using GLP-1 drugs like tirzepatide or semaglutide. In short, Anti-obesity medications might not just change waistlines; they could reshape how we understand ocular health. • 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗲 𝗢𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝘆 (𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝟮𝟵 – 𝗢𝗰𝘁 𝟯, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱) Each week in optometry reminds us that innovation moves fast, and patient care is evolving even faster. From new therapies to tech-enabled solutions, it’s not just about what’s possible; it’s about how practices turn that progress into better outcomes and experiences for patients. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 ✅ Patient QoL matters: New assessments for vision-degrading floaters highlight that understanding how eye conditions impact daily life is just as vital as clinical outcomes. ✅ Toric lens innovation: EyeCon 2025 showcased how new toric lenses help patients regain independence and confidence, closing gaps standard options can’t. ✅ Collaborative care counts: Integrated care between optometrists, ophthalmologists, and patients is improving results in areas like DME management and post-LASIK care. ✅ The horizon looks bold: Trials into post-LASIK night vision issues, glaucoma surgery, and nAMD therapies show a profession continually pushing boundaries. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝘁𝘀 Optometry isn’t just about lenses or procedures, it’s about conversations, choices, and trust. Staying aware of innovation ensures practices don’t just keep up, they lead in patient-centred care. At Verovian, we’ll keep sharing weekly insights to help practices turn knowledge into meaningful action, because the story of optometry is written in how care evolves, patient by patient. Stay tuned for more weekly insights. #OptometryUpdates #EyeCareInnovation #PatientExperience #VisionHealth #DryEye #ContactLenses #MyopiaManagement #OptometryPractice #VerovianCares

  • 𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗔𝗢𝗔’𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗡𝗔𝗩𝗖𝗣? 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘁: On September 17, 2025, NAVCP, representing the larger Vision Benefit Manager (VBM) industry, was challenged by the AOA for sharing misleading materials with Congress. Their actions were doing three things: Accusing optometrists of unethical behavior Threatening pro-doctor / pro-patient legislation Driving a power struggle over control of eye care 𝗦𝗼, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲? The AOA’s response was swift. NAVCP had to withdraw its inaccurate claims from Capitol Hill. And between September 28–30, over 600 optometrists and students gathered for the AOA’s biggest annual federal advocacy event. They met with lawmakers to talk about important issues, including VBM reform. We’re sharing this not to take sides, but to keep you in the loop. Even when politics come into play, knowing what’s happening matters. That’s why we stick to nothing but the truth, so you can see what’s going on, why it matters, and who is leading change in the industry. At the core, this isn’t just a political fight. It’s about control of the vision care system. Politics sets the stage, economics fuels it, and professional integrity is the prize. NAVCP is protecting a model that controls pricing, labs, and contracts. The AOA is pushing back to protect independence, patient choice, and trust. Understanding how politics, economics, and integrity all intersect is key to seeing why this matters, not just for optometrists, but for the future of eye care. In an industry where change, politics, and economics collide, staying informed isn’t optional; it’s how leaders are made. What’s your take? How much do politics and economics shape healthcare today? 📌 If you want to stay updated on the latest in optometry and eye care policy, subscribe to our page. #Optometry #VisionCare #HealthcarePolicy #IndustryInsight #AOA #VBM #OptometryLeadership #VerovianCares

  • 𝗙𝗗𝗔 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲𝘀 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗘𝘆𝗲𝗴𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗣𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗠𝘆𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗮 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has authorized the marketing of Essilor Stellest eyeglass lenses, and the first spectacles designed not only to correct myopia in children aged 6-12, but also to slow its progression. This marks a significant milestone in pediatric eye care. Until now, the only FDA-approved option for slowing myopia progression was contact lenses for children 8-12. The Stellest lenses fill a crucial gap, offering a lower-risk alternative for younger patients or those unable to wear contacts. Clinical trial data showed that the lenses reduced myopia progression by 71% and eye elongation by 53% over a 24-month period, compared to single vision lenses. With myopia prevalence projected to affect over 50% of the global population by 2050, this innovation could help reduce future risks of serious sight-threatening conditions, including retinal detachment, glaucoma, and myopic maculopathy. For optometrists, this development represents a new tool in managing childhood myopia and expanding treatment options and reinforcing the importance of early intervention. • 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝗻 𝗘𝘆𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗕𝗲 𝗮 𝗖𝗿𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽? A patient sits in your chair with a faint bruise near her eye. She says she “bumped into a cabinet.” The explanation is simple and plausible. But sometimes, behind a simple story lies a dangerous truth. Eye-care professionals are often the first to see signs of partner violence, not because patients disclose it, but because the evidence is written on their faces. Research shows women with ocular or orbital injuries caused by abuse face higher risks of repeated harm and even mortality. The stakes are high; your exam chair can become a frontline of defense. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗲𝘆𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗷𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 Not every bruise is abuse. But when bruising recurs, fractures don’t match the story, or injuries appear at different stages of healing, we must ask: could this patient be at risk? For many survivors, an eye exam is one of the rare moments they are separated from their partner and can speak privately with a trusted clinician. In that moment, what you notice and how you respond can make a difference. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼 ✅ 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗰𝘆. Always ensure a few minutes alone with the patient. ✅ 𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆, 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. Try: “I notice this injury, can you tell me what happened?” or “Sometimes injuries like this are caused by someone hurting you. Is that the case?” ✅ 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆. Describe location, size, colour, and the patient’s own words in quotes. If safe and with consent, photograph the injury. ✅ 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁, 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲. Offer resources and options; respect the patient’s autonomy. 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 ✅ A simple clinic protocol for screening, documenting, and referring. ✅ Discreet resource cards or QR codes that patients can take safely. ✅ Staff training on trauma-informed language and safety planning. ✅ A partner network with local advocacy groups and hotlines. A black eye may be an accident. Or it may be a silent try for help. As clinicians, we’re trusted with vision; sometimes we’re asked to see what’s hidden. 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘆? U.S. readers: National Domestic Violence Hotline, 800-799-SAFE (7233) or text START to 88788. • 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗲 𝗢𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝘆 (𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝟵–𝟭𝟲, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱) In optometry, it sometimes feels like innovation moves faster than we can catch our breath. New lenses, new treatments, new research, every week seems to bring another headline. But beneath the technology, a deeper question lingers: how do these changes shape the way practices care for people and build trust with their communities? 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁𝘀 This week reminded us that patient needs are as diverse as ever. ✅ 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗲𝘆𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱. A new report confirmed what many providers already sense, myopia is on the rise, and proactive management is no longer optional but essential. Practices that act early can shape healthier lifetimes of vision. ✅ 𝗗𝗿𝘆 𝗲𝘆𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. With treatments like Xiidra now available, we’re reminded that relief is not just clinical; it’s about improving daily comfort, confidence, and quality of life. ✅ 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘁𝘆 𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. Bausch + Lomb’s expanded GP portfolio offers new hope for patients with keratoconus, post-surgery complications, or prescriptions that don’t fit the “standard box.” Sometimes, the smallest adjustments can secure the deepest loyalty. ✅ 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘆. Premium IOLs promise freedom, but their real power lies in how well optometrists and ophthalmologists prepare patients for what’s possible, and what’s not. Communication, not technology, often determines satisfaction. ✅ 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗼𝗻. A new trial is exploring treatment for post-LASIK night vision impairment, halos, glare, starbursts. It’s not here yet, but it signals that the future of vision care will keep pushing boundaries. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝘁𝘀 Living at the intersection of technology and patient care means optometry is never just about lenses or procedures. It’s about conversations, expectations, and the choices practices make to prioritize what matters most: helping people see and live better. At Verovian, we’ll be sharing these reflections more often. Because the real story of optometry isn’t just found in product launches or research papers, it’s in how each practice adapts, grows, and supports the people behind every pair of eyes. Because in between the policy sessions and networking, something genuinely practice-changing was introduced: 𝗔𝗰𝘂𝘃𝘂𝗲 𝗢𝗮𝘀𝘆𝘀 𝗠𝗔𝗫 𝟭-𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗺. For years, presbyopic patients with astigmatism have been some of the most challenging to satisfy. The usual options left them juggling compromises, maybe clear distance vision but struggling at near, or decent multifocal performance but unstable due to their astigmatism. Often, the “solution” was contact lenses plus readers, which rarely felt ideal. This new daily disposable lens combines 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 and 𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰 designs in one, meaning: ✅Crisp, stable vision at all distances, even in low light ✅ All-day comfort with TearStable technology to lock in moisture ✅ Advanced optics tailored to pupil size and prescription needs ✅ Proven performance, with 95% of wearers reporting clear vision and 92% enjoying comfort all day ✅ 60% blue-violet light filtering with OptiBlue for digital-heavy lifestyles For practitioners, it’s a chance to finally say yes to a group of patients we’ve long had to manage with workarounds. It could also mean stronger retention and a new point of differentiation for practices ready to offer it. Sometimes, the real breakthroughs in our sector aren’t loud policy shifts or funding battles, they’re innovations that let us serve patients better, with confidence. #Optometry #EyeCare #OpticalProfessionals #ContactLenses #InnovationInOptics #Multifocal #Astigmatism #AOA2025 #VisionCare #VerovianCares

The rebrand reflects a broader strategic shift for the Dallas-based lens technology developer, known for its work in addressing digital eye strain, headaches, neck pain, and vision health concerns. By adopting the name Newton. Newton’s patented contoured prism lens technology has been in development for more than a decade. Research shows the lenses help align the eyes more effectively, with nearly 90% of patients experiencing relief from symptoms tied to eye misalignment. The company reports improvements for patients with headaches, motion sickness, and vision-related discomfort, often within days of wearing their first pair. For opticians and other eyecare professionals, the rebrand underscores a continued focus on patient outcomes and highlights how innovation in lens design could reshape day-to-day practice and patient experience.
