The School Capacity & Utilization Task Force kicked off a new year of study last week at the Karshner Museum. Members began their feasibility study of Spinning Elementary and Waller Road Elementary. Following the failure of the district’s February and April 2025 bond measures, which would have replaced both schools along with others, the Board asked SCUT to examine what closing either school could mean to neighboring schools, programs, students and families. The group will present its findings to the School Board on December 12. Join us in giving a big shout-out to our 2025 Capital Projects interns, Daniel (Emerald Ridge HS grad) and Spencer (Rogers HS senior and PHS robotics team member). This summer, they rolled up their sleeves to digitize architectural drawings and measure school spaces, keeping our building plans accurate and future-ready. One of their final projects took them into school kitchens, where they identified and measured sinks. Their data equipped the district and the Department of Health to quickly locate fixtures for water quality testing or repairs, work that directly supports safe, healthy learning environments. We are grateful for their curiosity, dedication, and the behind-the-scenes impact they made to keep our schools running strong. This summer, our Operations crew helped Glacier View Junior High lived up to its motto, “The Avalanche Way,” by making important accessibility upgrades for students with vision impairments. Crews added bright yellow paint to stairs and railings throughout campus, improving safety and visibility. These small but meaningful changes remove barriers and help every student feel confident, supported, and seen. We are proud to welcome students back to a school built with care, inclusion, and purpose. We’ve got our eye on safety! 📸 Over the summer, Emerald Ridge High School upgraded its CCTV security cameras as part of the 2024 Capital Levy, replacing older units with high-resolution models that offer clearer images, better coverage, and improved night vision. These “always-on” campus helpers give staff better tools to monitor key areas, respond quickly, and keep students and staff safe every day. 💧 Refill, refresh, repeat! This summer, Capital Projects installed upgraded chilled and filtered water bottle filling stations at Puyallup and Rogers High Schools. PSD takes student safety seriously. Routine water testing helps us catch potential lead in older plumbing, and we act immediately if levels exceed state standards, working closely with health authorities to ensure safe drinking water. These upgrades, funded through the 2024 Capital Levy, replace older bubblers with durable, filtered stations, reducing potential lead exposure and making it easier for students and staff to stay hydrated. Improving water access is just one part of our ongoing commitment to safe, healthy schools. Closing the book on the Library-Science Building! 🔬Built in 1962 and last updated in 1988, the building has now taken its final bow. Crews have fully cleared the site and are finishing landscaping, which will be complete by this fall. This makes way for the future: a proposed three-story instructional building designed for modern science learning, improved safety, and room to grow. Recommended by the 2024 Bond Advisory Committee, the new building would help relieve overcrowding, reduce reliance on portables, and prepare for future enrollment needs. The Rogers Aquatic Center is temporarily closed for emergency structural repairs after years of humidity took a toll on the facility’s wooden roof supports. While the damage isn’t visible from the outside, the behind-the-scenes systems that keep an indoor pool running, like air handling, heating, and water filtration, are complex and costly to maintain. Crews are hard at work making the pool safe, and this project serves as a reminder of the long-term investment required to preserve essential community spaces like this one. Woodland Elementary is pumped for the new school year! Over the summer, Capital Projects replaced two hardworking septic lift station pumps that had been on the job for 25 years. These hidden helpers quietly keep bathrooms and sinks running without a hitch, and the upgrade also brought new safety features and fencing. With the work wrapping up before the first day of school, everyone can look forward to a smooth start focused on learning, not plumbing problems. Hot diggity dirt! Fruitland Elementary is making big moves this summer. Crews have installed giant yellow underground tubes to manage stormwater, tested soil for long-term stability, and poured new sidewalks and curbing. All of it is possible thanks to your support of the 2024 Capital Levy. These upgrades will ease traffic, protect the environment, and make school drop-offs and pick-ups safer for everyone.
