California’s Central Valley is both an agricultural powerhouse and a vital stopover along the Pacific Flyway, once home to 4 million acres of wetlands that supported tens of millions of migrating birds. Today, more than 95% of that habitat is gone 🐦💔 To address this crisis, The Nature Conservancy, Audubon California, and Point Blue Conservation Science formed the Migratory Bird Conservation Partnership and alongside the California Rice Commission launched #BirdReturns—a program that pays farmers and wetland owners to flood fields and create much-needed habitat for shorebirds. Over the last decade, BirdReturns has partnered with 200+ growers and wetland managers, provided $6M+ in direct payments, and created habitat when and where birds need it most. But now, funding is at risk. ➡️ Take action: Urge your state representatives to protect migratory birds and support California farmers. Sign the pledge to support BirdReturns: https://nature.ly/3Hb5Aye

After more than a decade since the largest marine epidemic began, a collaboration between the Hakai Institute, The Nature Conservancy and partners, scientists have identified the culprit behind sea star wasting disease — Vibrio pectenicida. This discovery could be the turning point in the effort to bring back the sunflower sea star, a once-abundant predator now critically endangered. “It opens the opportunity to identify whether any animals are resistant to the disease and allows us to test for the presence of the disease both in the wild and in labs and aquariums,” -Norah Eddy, Associate Director of The Nature Conservancy in California's Ocean Program. ➡️ Nature Ecology and Evolution paper: https://lnkd.in/g5czeNhe ➡️ Read the San Francisco Chronicle article: https://lnkd.in/gHBajYP2. ➡️ Read the The New York Times article: https://lnkd.in/gnxey2BA

TNC is proud to be a founding member of the Wildfire Solutions Coalition.
Members of the Wildfire Solutions Coalition, representing organizations dedicated to achieving California’s wildfire resilience goals and protecting the health of our landscapes and communities, have united in support of decisive climate action. 🔥💧🚜⛰️ In a letter addressed to the honorable members of the California Legislature, the Coalition calls for reauthorization of the Cap-and-Trade program & protection of the current $200 million allocation for wildfire resilience in this year’s budget. As the budget deficit eases, the Wildfire Solutions Coalition believes that it is necessary to increase investment of Cap-and-Trade auction revenues in regionally appropriate wildfire resilience actions, eventually reaching 10% of the fund dedicated to turning the corner on the wildfire crisis. Today is the 5th anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act! This law, passed in 2020, permanently funded the Land and Water Conservation Fund, one of our best tools for protecting America’s natural landscapes. But now LWCF—and our natural landscapes—are under threat. Join us and tell your elected leaders to continue to fund LWCF so the lands and waters central to our health, economy and way of life are protected for this and future generations. LWCF helps: 🌱 Protect land and wildlife habitat in national parks, national wildlife refuges and national forests. 🌱 Protects habitat for rare and endangered species in partnership with local governments 🌱 Preserve working forests and ranchlands. 🌱 Support state and local parks and playgrounds in every state. 🌱 Preserve historic and cultural sites around the country. 🌱 Provide the resources that local communities need to meet their diverse conservation and recreation needs. ➡️ Stand with us now and tell Congress to protect this funding: https://nature.ly/4lofaMp.

🌊NEW RESEARCH 🌊 shows most strictly protected marine areas are working. Despite common perceptions, industrial fishing is rare in fully and highly protected MPAs, according to a new study published in Science Magazine. Using AI and satellite data, scientists found that these areas are effectively deterring fishing activity — with some showing no industrial vessels at all over a 5-year period.🐟🐟🐟 📉 Fishing activity in protected areas was 9x lower than in surrounding unprotected waters. “This challenges the notion that MPAs banning industrial fishing are ineffective” says The Nature Conservancy scientist Sara Orofino. “These findings show they can work — and do.” Learn how this research is shifting the conversation on ocean protection: ➡️ Cool Green Science: https://nature.ly/40AdKqv ➡️ Santa Barbara Independent: https://nature.ly/4mcepGU ➡️ Full paper: https://nature.ly/45bfNTl

On the edge of the map, 1,000 miles south of Hawaiʻi, there is an island where nature rules. TNC’s Palmyra Atoll is a conservation innovation hub and a hope spot, home to lush tropical forests and some of the world’s most pristine coral reefs. But in 2023, Palmyra’s reefs were devastated by a bleaching event 🪸🪸 Check out the latest Notes from the Field video to learn how TNC and our partners responded to this coral crisis at Palmyra and what we learned about the power of nature.
