To all of our friends and supporters. The Indo-Pacific Program has served the foreign policy community since 1977. In 2015, we were joined by our colleagues at the Hyundai Motor-Korea Foundation Center for Korean History and Public Policy, and in 2022 by our colleagues with the South Asia Institute. Our programs became home to hundreds of fellows over the years, as well as producing countless programs, books, and analysis about the region. As you may be aware, the Wilson Center is being reduced to its statutory minimum function. As a result, we will no longer be continuing with our programming and scholarships. We have enjoyed working with the community on the important issues facing the Indo-Pacific region. My colleagues and I at the Wilson Center | Indo-Pacific Program have co-authored a new report calling for a "Reset" in the Indo-Pacific. We argue that the scale of the challenge posed by the PRC and others demands serious rethinking in US strategy and policy toward the region. This past November was a change election, and the incoming Trump administration should hit the reset button on US foreign policy in the Indo-Pacific. In Southeast Asia, this means a few things (which I will elaborate on in future articles), but, top of the line: 1). A true economic strategy to ensure that the US and its companies are at the center of growth, innovation, and investment; 2). A dedicated effort to engage bilaterally with key countries; and 3). A willingness to *act* to shape the region. Number 3 in particular means breaking with outdated ideas and the status quo. For instance, in my opinion, ramping up support for the resistance in #Myanmar first and foremost. Diplomatic recognition of the NUG, meaningful material support (financially and on the battlefield in line with BURMA Act), and a genuine strategy to start. It's time to get serious in the Indo-Pacific.

This week, I joined BBC News The Context to discuss US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken’s visit to #SouthKorea. Only one month after now-impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol’s shocking call for martial law, South Korea’s political landscape remains in turmoil. The country is now on its third head of state as Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok takes the helm following the 3-week political scramble. During the interview, I discussed the role Secretary Blinken’s visit plays in symbolizing US continued commitment to the 7-decades long US-ROK security alliance and the importance overall of maintaining strong US-#IndoPacific partnerships. Amid the broadening Russia-#NorthKorea partnership, the US and regional allies cannot risk appearing weak. Prior to the Dec. 3 martial law declaration, South Korean political leaders were proactively preparing to address the incoming Trump administration’s demands for higher defense spending. However, as South Korea awaits the Constitutional Court’s impeachment verdict, uncertainty remains regarding the future of political leadership in early 2025.
