Across Africa, over 700 million people still lack access to safe sanitation. Without strong data systems, governments and utilities plan in the dark, investments miss the mark, regulators can’t enforce standards, and vulnerable communities are left behind. Data that tells us where the gaps are, where investments should go, and how to hold services accountable. In this World Economic Forum op-ed, Alyse Schrecongost and I explored how treating data as infrastructure can change the story, how digital public infrastructure can transform urban sanitation systems across Africa, and why it must be seen as a core part of our cities’ growth. African governments are investing billions in sanitation infrastructure while often underinvesting in the data systems that make those investments effective. From our assessment of non-sewered sanitation (NSS) service delivery across Sub-Saharan Africa (via WSH Data Labs), 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐬: day-to-day operational monitoring is limited. Fewer than 15% of utilities maintain up-to-date facility maps—tools that should guide budgeting, routing, compliance, and of NSS services—leaving limited visibility, weaker targeting of underserved areas, and constrained ability to verify that sanitation services were actually delivered. In this World Economic Forum piece, our Principal Executive Ridwan Sorunke and Alyse Schrecongost, senior strategic advisor on water & sanitation governance, 𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞: data infrastructure delivers better ROI than physical infrastructure alone across the NSS service chain—from containment to emptying, transport, and treatment/reuse. Evidence from Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority Tanzania’s unified reporting, Uganda’s service-request models, and Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation Company Zambia’s end-to-end tracking shows measurable gains when sanitation decisions and capital allocation are guided by data. 🚨 Coming up June 5: A deeper dive into the future of sanitation data systems   At AfWASA ICE 2025, something significant happened: the unveiling of the most extensive cross-country assessment of non-sewered sanitation data systems ever conducted in Sub-Saharan Africa.
