COO @ Blip: boost brand recognition and recall with smart OOH

Last year, a CMO pulled $60k+ in billboard spend from LA, not because the billboards didn't work, but because the creative had gone stale from overexposure. His creative had been up for 3 straight months in one of the most saturated media markets in the U.S. — and the message hadn't changed once. What *was* really saturated wasn't the market. It was the creative. They shouldn't have turned off the advertising...the key is NOT to mess with the consistent messagING, even if the messagES need to be refreshed from time to time. Consistency is the mother of results. Folks who have been in the military have seen this principle in preparing for combat; it's not only about the variety of training, but also about the consistent reps at key activities. My instructors hammered into us: "Heroes don't rise to the occasion. When bullets fly, your brain shuts off, and you sink to your level of training." Your advertising works the same way. When a consumer needs your solution, they don't remember that clever billboard they saw once. They default to the brand that's been consistently reinforced in their memory. This is why I push back when clients worry about "too much advertising" for out-of-home campaigns. The reality: → In a market of 1M+ people, only a fraction see your ad each day → Most viewers notice it for just 2-3 seconds → The average person needs 7+ exposures before taking action We have dozens of clients right now who are seeing increases in direct traffic and organic search after 6+ months of consistent ad spend and monthly refreshed creative. Ad fatigue does exist, but the solution isn't less advertising. It's having strategic creative cycles that refresh your message while maintaining consistent presence. We've refined this approach into a simple principle: Creativity wins eyeballs, but consistency wins hearts. Most marketers get this backward. They constantly chase novelty at the expense of the repetition that builds recognition and trust. Let your competitors worry about being "too present" in the market. The businesses that dominate understand that repetition builds reputation. That's not just marketing theory; it's cognitive science. The path to conversion isn't paved with brilliance, but with the steady drumbeat of presence that makes your brand the automatic choice when the moment of decision arrives.

Gen Z and Gen Alpha don’t experience your brand in silos. They see it all at once… on TikTok, in stores, through creators, in group chats, and across platforms you don’t control. And if the message doesn’t line up, you lose credibility. We’ve worked with brands where the campaign tone was perfect, but the retail experience felt corporate.  Or where the social content was engaging, but the creator activation didn’t reflect the brand at all. Consistency doesn’t mean repetition. It means clarity.  Familiar cues, values, and tone, everywhere the brand shows up. What that requires: – A clear voice, not just a style guide – Creative partners who understand context, not just copy – A central team that enables, not just polices – Strong principles that flex without breaking If your brand feels different in every place it shows up, it doesn’t feel like a brand at all. And with this generation, that’s all it takes to be forgotten.

Imagine entering a store and instantly recognizing a product, not by its name, but by its look, feel, and design. That’s the power of brand consistency. But why does it matter so much? Brand consistency is the secret sauce that turns ordinary products into household names. Think of Nike. The swoosh isn’t just a logo; it’s a symbol that tells you what to expect—innovation, quality, and performance. But Nike didn’t achieve this overnight. It’s the result of meticulous, unwavering brand consistency across every touchpoint, including their industrial design. In product development, brand consistency goes beyond just logos and colors. It’s about how the product feels in your hand, the materials used, and even the unboxing experience. Every element should tell the same story, reflecting your brand's values at every step. Challenges in Achieving Brand Consistency: - Alignment Across Teams: It’s challenging to keep design, engineering, and marketing teams aligned on brand values, especially in a fast-paced environment. - Maintaining Quality Control: Ensuring consistency in materials and finishes across production batches can be a daunting task. - Evolving Market Trends: Staying true to your brand while adapting to new market trends is a delicate balancing act. Solutions: - Clear Branding Guidelines: Just as Nike has strict brand guidelines, your design team should too. This ensures that every product iteration remains true to your brand identity. - Quality Control Investments: Regular audits and stringent quality checks can help maintain consistency across materials and finishes. - Innovate Within Your Brand Framework: As trends evolve, innovate within your brand’s core values to stay relevant without losing your identity. Consistency in brand design isn’t just about looking good—it’s about building trust and loyalty. And in today’s crowded market, that’s your biggest asset. #branding #brandconsistency #branddesign #design --- I'm Jonathan Thai , a seasoned Silicon Valley designer with over a decade under my belt bringing products to life. • Consistency creates trust. Say what you will do. Do what you said you would. Reliability. Consistency. Whatever you call it, it is a customer experience superpower. When a brand is clear about what its customers can expect, and then it delivers on those expectations with its product, its service, its experience, that is consistency. That builds trust. ✈ Southwest Airlines is a great example. 💺 No seat assignments. You know this when you book with them. 2️⃣ checked bags for free. You know this as well. Guess what? They didn’t used to advertise about 2 free checked bags. Because 10 years ago, that wasn’t special. Now, with all the other airlines charging, Southwest has a new point of differentiation. Because of their consistency. While The Southwest experience is changing, it is changing in a predictable way. It does not feel like a moving target. How do you create consistency in your customer experience? Share your thoughts in the comments below. 👇 And here are 5 steps to follow to build trust through consistency: 🔷Start with the end in mind. What do your customers expect from you? 🔷Identify experience elements that meet those customer expectations. Ask yourself, What can we consistently deliver that will meet our customers’ expectations? 🔷Set customers’ expectations appropriately. Make promises about what you will consistently deliver. 🔷Keep those promises with your experience. Obvious, but make sure you’re keeping your promises the vast majority of the time. 🔷Apologize and rectify when you don’t keep your promises. This reinforces that unkept promises are rare exceptions, not signs of a new pattern. If you are showing up consistently, setting expectations for an experience that customers want, and keeping those expectations in most instances, then the exceptions stay exceptions. And, in fact, they’re service recovery opportunities that reinforce the fact that you usually do keep your promises, and that you take it seriously when you don’t keep your promises. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁. 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
