This tendency highlights a crucial point: the notion of right or wrong is largely subjective, framed by personal values and experiences. The key, then, is to rely on one's internal value system to guide interpretations and decisions, trusting in one's own judgment while continuously refining these personal standards. This approach empowers individuals to discern right from wrong more clearly. This concept is particularly relevant in the context of workplace conflicts, such as those between employees and supervisors. Conflicts often arise from differing interpretations of the same situation, leading to varied outcomes and, occasionally, misinterpretations that could be perceived as malicious. In such scenarios, while it's natural to seek validation from others, it's more beneficial to focus on how these conflicts align with your personal values. If a situation deeply conflicts with your values, trusting your judgment and making choices that resonate with your beliefs is crucial. Often, there's no absolute right or wrong in many of these situations. Drawing from personal experience, I've faced conflicts with employees where both our perspectives seemed valid from our respective viewpoints. Even when I believed in my stance, I understood the impact of my approach on the employee's values. This didn't necessarily lead me to change my methods, but it fostered a deeper understanding of the employee's inability to embrace my perspective. In debates over values, clear-cut right or wrong answers are rare, but being acutely aware of your own values and priorities can significantly aid in decision-making. In my early career, I worked for a copier sales company where winning trumped ethics. Year-end competitions were won through fake orders, and the company turned a blind eye. I regularly take time to introspect and assess my experiences, especially at the end of each year. In this field, where professionalism, presentation, legitimacy, relationships, care, thoughtfulness, and competency are not just ideals but essentials, conviction in these values is paramount. I recall a defining moment with James Tabur at the closing table of a multimillion-dollar deal. We were confident, yet our convictions were put to the ultimate test. Both parties shared common ground, yet not all values aligned. Faced with this challenge, we stood firm, our conviction to our principles outweighing the urge to compromise for expediency's sake. To ALL navigating this complex landscape: remember, it's easy to waver under pressure, to bend during negotiations, or to second-guess under scrutiny. Resist the urge. Let your conviction in your values lead the way, maintaining the high road of integrity. Let's not merely chase success; let's embody it with conviction. Because in the end, it is not just what we achieve that matters, but how we achieve it.
