A few weeks ago, I was ecstatic to be offered a partnership opportunity with another recruitment agency - a promising freelance gig, exactly what I was looking for while trying to figure out what I wanted next. However, sometimes life throws you a curveball, and you realise that not every opportunity is the right fit for you. From the first day of the collaboration, it became evident that our values didn't align at all. For the four days I stuck with this gig, I couldn't help but feel out of place and, truth be told, embarrassed to have my name associated with this agency. So, why am I sharing this with you? Well, in the world of recruitment and in life in general, your reputation is invaluable. In my years in this industry, I've learned that your reputation is not just about the number of placements you make or the deals you close. It's about the trust and respect you earn from clients, candidates, and colleagues. It's about the way people perceive you, both professionally and personally. When you're building a career, it's easy to get caught up in the chase for opportunities and financial gain, but remember, your reputation is the foundation upon which your entire career is built. It's the sum of your integrity, your ethics, and your commitment to doing what's right, even when it's difficult. In my case, I couldn't jeopardise the reputation I've worked hard to build over the years for the sake of a short-term gig and a paycheck. I value the connections I've made, both professionally and personally, and I know that those relationships are more important than any short-term gain. So, here's my reminder to all of you: It's okay for things not to work out. Sometimes, saying no to the wrong opportunity is the best decision you can make for your career and your reputation. I hadn't planned to post today. A conversation with a sales rep prompted me to do so. She's struggling with her "personal brand." She's comparing her reputation to that of her employer. It's an exercise all of us do from time to time. This is what I told her. "Your brand (your personal marketing) is everything you do to put your product in the hands of your customer." What you do (your behavior) is more important than your collateral or power point presentation. How you manage each moment of truth matters more than your logo. I've written on this before, so I won't wear it out today. I'll simply ask that you identify moments of truth and think about how you manage each one. The work is going to get done properly. The ride you take the client on getting there is what matters. How quickly do you return calls? Email messages? Do you make your client ask for updates or do you start their day by keeping them informed unsolicited? Are your invoices as promised? Are you fun? Do you provide ideas? Do you excite your client or simply deliver exactly what was ordered? Your answer matters. How you make your client feel matters. You matter more to them than the company you represent. If you don't...any success you have will be temporary. Let me add this. Being outrageous is ok if you deliver. I'm a big personality. It was and is a critical part of my brand. I would have been a loud and intolerable bore if I didn't deliver the goods. The same is so for the dude that made this cookbook. My birthday was 11/5 and I received this as a gift. It's outrageous, hysterical and I love it. The recipes look awesome too. He couldn't sell books if the food was no good. So...as you examine your reputation...start in the mirror. Get that right before you start on your company. It's the most critical thing. It's your personal brand. Gotta go. I'm planning to cook a late breakfast from this book. It fell open to the "gin & juice" page. That one looks easy.
