Don't ever be the "I should have cared more" person. I can't even begin to tell you how many candidates I have spoken with that not just half-assed a conversation with me, an initial recruiter, but on interviews. They get rejected and then say: "Wow, I really liked that role; I wish I had done some research beforehand." ❇️ The single most important advice for someone looking for a new job is to thoroughly research and understand the company and the position you are applying for. This encompasses several key aspects: 1. **Company Research:** Learn about the company's mission, values, culture, products or services, and recent developments. ↴ ➡ Deeper than a quick website scan, understanding the company's background and goals will enable you to tailor your application and interview responses to align with what they are looking for in a candidate. 2. **Job Description** Read the job description carefully to identify the specific skills, qualifications, and responsibilities required for the role.↴ ➡ This will help you tailor your resume to highlight your relevant experiences and abilities. 3. **Customize Applications** No one wants to keep entering the same application info each time. But you should avoid sending generic applications to multiple companies. ↴ ➡ Instead, customize (within reason) your resume and cover letter for each application to demonstrate your genuine interest in that particular role and how you can contribute to the company's success. 4. **Interview Preparation** Prepare for interviews by practicing common interview questions and crafting thoughtful responses that showcase your skills and experiences. ↴ ➡ Also, be prepared to ask thoughtful questions about the company and the position during the interview to demonstrate your genuine interest. 5. **Showcase Your Value** Focus on showcasing the value you can bring to the company rather than solely emphasizing what the job offers. ↴ ➡ Employers are interested in candidates who can solve their problems and contribute to their organization's success. 6. **Positive Online Presence** Ensure your online presence, including social media profiles and professional platforms like LinkedIn, represents you positively. ↴ ➡ Many employers and recruiters research candidates online before making hiring decisions. I do a lot of resume reviews. I offer everyone in my job search support group a free review and I'm always happy to help a job seeker out. But, after doing 100s of reviews, here is something I've noticed: Most challenges in a job search are not about the resume. They're about the job search strategy. Most folks have a strategy that looks like this: 1. Update resume 2. Apply to jobs 3. Update resume some more 4. Apply to more jobs 5. Rinse and repeat And, while this strategy can work (Yes! People still get jobs applying cold!), it can also often lead to a very long, arduous process of spinning your wheels and not making the traction you want. Here's how to be more strategic (and get more out of LinkedIn!) : 1️⃣ Start by identifying your target companies. Aim for a list of around 30 organizations that align with your career goals and aspirations. Note: This list can be edited at any time along the journey as you discover new and interesting companies. 2️⃣ Leverage your network on LinkedIn. Identify alumni, first, and second-degree connections at each of your target companies. These connections can be valuable sources of information and insights. 3️⃣ Reach out to your connections. Politely ask for their insights into the company and any tips on positioning yourself effectively for a role in the future. You can do this by asking for a coffee chat, or through a DM conversation. Their firsthand knowledge can provide you with a competitive advantage. 4️⃣ Get clear on what you want. When applying for positions, prioritize opportunities that are in line with your values and align with your interests. This focused approach will increase your chances of finding a meaningful and fulfilling role. 5️⃣ Reach back out. Once you've applied, don't hesitate to reach out to your contacts and inform them about your application. Use this opportunity to highlight your skills and qualifications, 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘺 pitching yourself as a top candidate. From a recruiter's perspective, I've noticed that many job seekers apply to positions on job boards as they discover them. While the enthusiasm is great, a structured approach can be more effective. If you're setting aside a specific 3-hour block just for applying to job postings, here's a strategy to consider: 1. First Hour: Scan through job postings. Instead of applying immediately, bookmark or save the ones that align with your skills and interests. 2. Second Hour: For each of the shortlisted postings, create individualized versions of your resume. Adjust each version to emphasize experiences and skills that are most relevant to that specific job's requirements. By the end of this hour, you should have a unique resume tailored for each job you intend to apply for. 3. Third Hour: With your tailored resumes ready, proceed to submit your applications. Use the corresponding resume for each job posting. After each submission, note it in your tracking system or spreadsheet to stay organized and facilitate follow-ups. By breaking down the application process in this manner, you ensure that every resume you send is not only relevant but also showcases your best fit for the position. I often talk about how important it is to "think about your audience" during your job search. It's crucial to understand the employer's needs and priorities for each position, then emphasize in your application materials and interview responses the ways you can successfully meet their needs. But tailoring your resume for every single job application can be exhausting, especially if you're revamping your entire resume each and every time... So, a time-saving measure that I, personally, like to employ includes leveraging "master" resumes and a professional summary section at the top of each resume. Here is what I do: 1️⃣ I think about the types of roles and fields (usually 2-4) that interest me and align with my skills and experience so I know my targets 2️⃣ I create the same number of master resumes, with a different resume tailored specifically to each type of role or field 3️⃣ On each master resume, I have a placeholder section for a professional summary, which I will create or update with each application 4️⃣ When I find a job to which I want to apply, I carefully analyze the job description so I have a strong understanding of my audience 5️⃣ Next, I choose the appropriate master resume and make some minor tweaks or edits to my bullet points so they align better with the role 6️⃣ Then, I will craft a professional summary that is highly tailored to that specific role, highlighting my most relevant abilities and accomplishments This strategy allows me to think about my audience and tailor my resume for every application without having to fully re-write my resume each time. I only have to write one new paragraph and make some minor edits in a few other places. Plus, the professional summary is right at the top of my resume, so the portion that is most heavily tailored for each role is likely the first section that is read with each application. This approach might not work for everyone, especially if you're considering a particularly wide range of potential positions, but it can definitely save you a lot of time without having to sacrifice the quality of your applications. #resumewriting #jobsearchtips #jobsearchadvice

Here is how I helped him land 3 job offers. 1/ Stopped applying for jobs and narrowed his focus. -He took a step back and developed a narrow focus on the industry and role he wanted. 2/ Developed a target list of companies and roles he wanted to work for. -His list (10-15) matched his role and the industry he desired. 3/ Revamped his resume to attract his niche target. -He used language, skills, and quantifiable results that his niche desired. 4/ Networked with former coworkers and decision-makers from his target market. -He discovered unposted roles and was introduced to companies. 5/ Reached out to decision-makers on LinkedIn if he didn't have a direct connection. -He researched companies, responded to posts, and built relationships. He started receiving interview requests within the first week. If you aren't hearing back, try one new thing from what you are now doing. This is a very competitive job market. If you’re a job seeker in the marketing space and kicking off -or resetting- your job search my BEST piece of advice… Approach your job search like you would a new marketing campaign. 1. Start with research. Spend time researching the company, the industry, and the leaders/team you’ll be working with - the more preparation the better. 2. Know your audience. Your resume, LinkedIn profile, emails - should reflect your expertise - and should vary based on company and job. 3. Personalize your content. Knowing your audience and doing your research will help you personalize all the content you’re sending as part of your search. 4. Utilize multiple channels. Apply on LinkedIn, apply on company websites, reach out to your network for introductions, reach out directly to hiring managers and recruiters. And when you do be concise and specific. Do the work to make it easy for the other person to refer or assess fit. 5. Retarget. Consider how you follow-up from recent and past interviews. Send those thank you emails, go back to past positive interviewers, send connection requests on LinkedIn. 6. Have a call to action. Do you need an introduction? Do you want to understand the status of the search and your candidacy? Have a request - a specific call to action - for your reader. 7. Know your numbers - share your impact. Make sure in every conversation - on every resume- you have data to show your impact and give context to your work. Why is it happening and what we can do about it 🔽 First of all, it's not necessarily about you; it's about how your credentials match up with the specific job you're applying for. Imagine a job posting as a request for a proposal, and your resume as the sales pitch. Just like a savvy salesperson tailors their pitch to different clients, you should customize your resume for each job you're interested in. Before you protest, "I don't have time for that!" - don't worry, we're not talking about a complete resume overhaul. It's about making a few strategic tweaks to align your resume with the job description. Remember the resume's job isn't to land you the job; it's to land you an interview. Recruiters spend about 7.4 seconds scanning a resume, so the more tailored yours is to a specific role, the better. Here are the 3 categories to consider when tailoring your resume: 1️⃣ Check the job description for how the company describes skills, both hard and soft. Are they mentioned as tools (Excel, PowerPoint) or tactics (financial analysis, presentation design)? Make sure your resume echoes these. 2️⃣ Think of industry knowledge as your domain expertise. If you've worked in a similar industry to the one you're applying for, that's a big plus. Explain how your skills are transferable if you're changing industries. 3️⃣ Understand how the company makes money and what it sells. Are they into software or hardware? B2B or B2C? Tailor your resume to show you understand their product and target audience. Now, let's dive into the job description to find what the company values most: 1️⃣ Are there frequently repeated skills or tools in the job posting? Are certain terms cropping up repeatedly? That's a sign of importance. 2️⃣ Pay attention to specific language used in the job posting, such as "must have," "experience with," or "skills in." These words indicate what's crucial. Based on this information, tailor your resume by picking the top 3 to 5 things that matter most in the job description, highlighting them in the top half of the first page of your resume. Don't feel shy about showcasing your achievements. It's your chance to brag a little. Remember, you're the salesperson, and the product you're selling is YOU!
