YouTube Reaches 1 Billion Hours of Video Viewed Daily, Topping Netflix & Co.

Since the inception of streaming video, Google-owned YouTube has topped the viewing market share across all devices, including the household television.

YouTube Dec. 11 confirmed that it exceeded 1 billion hours viewed daily in 2024, with sports content consumption growing 30% year-over-year, as users visited the platform to get clips, highlights, and post-game interviews across their favorite teams and players.

The platform was the lone streaming service to top 10% household TV market share in November, ahead of Netflix (7.7%), Prime Video (3.7%) and Hulu with 2.7%, according to Nielsen.

YouTube said “Ms. Rachel — Toddler Learning Videos,” with 12.7 million subscribers, and had one of the highest watch-times on TVs across YouTube channels in the last year. The platform has also installed enhanced parental controls giving parents the power to prevent their kids from accessing inappropriate content.

Separately, YouTube said viewers consumed more than 400 million hours of podcasts monthly on living room devices, driven by true crime, beauty and self-help genres.

The share of videos uploaded to YouTube in 4K resolution increased 35% year over year, as creators prioritized high-quality viewing across HDTVs. The platform said the number of creators making a majority of their revenue from TV is up more than 30% year over year.

“To further fuel this growth and support creators, we recently made it even easier for viewers to subscribe to their favorite channels, while watching on TV by adding the subscribe button directly to the video player,” Kurt Wilms, senior director, product management, YouTube on TV, wrote in a blog post. “Early tests of this streamlined button show more than a 40% increase in net subscribers through the television.”
