Using Image Generation

  • Image generation gives you the ability to create new images via text prompts or edit images which are generated or uploaded.

  • To generate an image, ask Copilot to generate an image to your liking. For example: "create an image of a cute puppy". Once an image is created you can ask Copilot to make edits or changes.

  • Images generated or uploaded to Copilot are available for 30 days. This includes any thumbnails, which remain publicly accessible for the same duration. After this time, images and thumbnails are deleted from our system. You can always visit to delete your conversation history sooner. Click here.

  • Images are used by Copilot for the sole purpose of helping you have engaging conversations and make modifications to images based on your requests. At this time Microsoft does not use any images for training or secondary use.

  • All images you upload for editing using Copilot Image Generation should be original images that you own or have the rights to use. Do not upload images that infringe third-party rights (including copyright, trademark or publicity rights), violate the privacy of others, include depictions of individuals without consent or otherwise violate the Microsoft Services Agreement and Copilot Code of Conduct. You are solely responsible for the images you upload. Your account or Copilot usage may be restricted or suspended if we detect an attempt to upload illegal content.

  • The latest model creates highly accurate and detailed images, which may require a few minutes.

Learn more about Copilot Vision

  • We’re taking our time to garner feedback and iterate on the technology, and will expand access to more Copilot endpoints soon.

  • Copilot Vision and Recall are different features with different goals in mind:

Vision works strictly in the context of what you have chosen to share for that Vision session (a site in Edge, an app in Windows, your camera on Copilot mobile). You can turn this feature on when you want Copilot's assistance with something you have open. The only memory that Copilot will have of what you conversed about will be the transcript of your conversation that is saved to your chat history. You can delete your chat history at any time. Screenshots, audio and context are not stored by Copilot.

Recall is a feature that will only be supported on Copilot+ PCs. For Copilot+ PC users who opt in, Recall takes encrypted snapshots of a user's PC screen across apps, websites, images or documents. Snapshots are then locally stored and locally analysed on the user's device. Recall will operate like the user's own virtual, private “photographic memory” on their Copilot+ PC. Learn more at Privacy and control over your Recall experience – Microsoft Support.

Wake Word on Copilot on Windows

  • Copilot on Windows users can invoke Copilot with the phrase “Hey Copilot”. This opt-in feature gives you a new way to easily start a conversation with Copilot Voice, anytime the feature is enabled, your PC is unlocked and the Copilot app is running. End your conversation by tapping the X on the Copilot Voice interface. With this new hands-free experience, you can stay in your flow when you need answers to a question or just need someone to bounce an idea off of.

  • Today, the wake word, “Hey Copilot”, is only available on the Copilot on Windows app.

  • No, you must enable this feature within Copilot’s settings to use it.

    To configure click here or:

    1. Open Copilot
    2. Tap your avatar at the bottom of your sidebar
    3. Tap Settings
    4. Scroll down to Voice mode
    5. Toggle “Listen for ‘Hey Copilot’ to start a conversation on or off”. It is off by default.
    • Anytime your PC is unlocked, the feature is enabled, and the Copilot app is running, simply say “Hey Copilot” or “Hey Copilot, what is the weather in Palm Springs this weekend?” (or whatever question you have) and Copilot Voice will respond.

    • Anytime the wake word is detected you will see the Copilot Voice Floating UI appear on the bottom of your screen and either hear a small chime, or a voice greeting or response from Copilot.

You can end a conversation by tapping the X on the Copilot Voice interface or wait a few seconds without speaking and the call will end automatically. The Copilot Voice interface will disappear when the call has ended.

  • Windows will show Copilot in use of the microphone via the Windows System Tray when either of these are true:

    • “Hey Copilot” is enabled and the Copilot app is running in (open, minimised, or running in the background)

    • Any Copilot Voice conversation is going on

  • If you see the Copilot Voice interface, you are in a conversation with Copilot Voice.

  • No. When “Hey Copilot” is enabled, Copilot uses the microphone with an on-device wake word spotter that only detects the “Hey Copilot” phrase.

The wake word spotter uses an on-device 10 second audio buffer in memory. This audio buffer is never recorded or stored locally.

When the wake word is detected, the Copilot Voice Floating UI will appear and begin to establish a Copilot Voice conversation. In parallel, the audio buffer will send audio from when “Hey Copilot” was detected to the cloud so it can be used to help answer the question you asked.

  • No, your PC must be powered on and unlocked. It will respond to any voice it hears when unlocked.

  • Recognition of the wake word is always performed locally and will try to establish a Copilot Voice call when detected. If you're offline, Copilot will attempt to establish a connection but won’t succeed and the call will end. Copilot Voice responses require internet access and cloud processing, similar to typed interactions.

  • While “Hey Copilot” is optimised to work on a broad variety of devices, some users may find impact on their battery when using this feature. Impact can vary depending on battery size, system configuration and environment. Users should verify they have the latest updates from Windows Update.

If users find their battery life experience to be high, users can disable “Hey Copilot” and use other methods like Press to talk to quickly access Copilot Voice.

  • Some Bluetooth headsets may experience reduced audio quality playback when “Hey Copilot” is enabled. Users can check with their headset vendor for latest firmware or drivers which may address the problem. If the issue persists, users can disable “Hey Copilot” and may prefer to use Press to talk to quickly access Copilot Voice instead.

  • While this feature is available worldwide, the “Hey Copilot” wake word is only trained and available in English. After starting a conversation, you can continue speaking in any language that is currently supported.

  • Product visuals simulated, and subject to change. Feature and app availability and functionality may vary by region, device type and browser version. Use of certain features requires sign-in to your Microsoft account. Copilot Terms apply.
  • [1] App availability varies by device/language. Features vary by platform. Minimum age limits may apply to use of AI features. Details.
