Practical No: 10: Object Components & Instruments

The document discusses the natural response of an inductor in a circuit. It contains: 1) An explanation of how an inductor stores energy in a magnetic field and can delay and reshape alternating currents due to its inductance. 2) Details that the current through an inductor will either increase or decrease exponentially over time depending on whether the current is increasing or decreasing, with a time constant that measures how long it takes to reach 63% of its final value. 3) A calculation of the RL time constant of 1.5 seconds for a particular circuit containing a 3H inductor and 2Ω resistor.

Observe the Natural Response Of Inductor On Simulation

COMPONENTS & INSTRUMENTS:

1. 2. 3. 4. Inductor. Resistors. DC power supply. Multimeter.

Theory:
A resistor-inductor circuit (RL circuit), or RL filter or RL network, is one of the simplest analogue infinite impulse response electronic filters. It consists of a resistor and an inductor, either in series or in parallel, driven by a voltage source. An inductor or a reactor is a passive electrical component that can store energy in a magnetic field created by the electric current passing through it. An inductor's ability to store magnetic energy is measured by its inductance, in units of henries. Typically an inductor is a conducting wire shaped as a coil, the loops helping to create a strong magnetic field inside the coil due to Faraday's Law of Induction. Inductors are one of the basic electronic components used in electronics where current and voltage change with time, due to the ability of inductors to delay and reshape alternating currents. current is increasing in an inductor then the current will increase exponentially to a maximum value.

Here t is the time constant of the circuit with units of time.

Whenever you know that the current is decreasing from some initial value Io then it will decrease exponentially.

The time constant is a measure of the time it takes the current to reach 63% of its maximum value or to decay away from its initial value. Alternately, it is value of the current when t = t.

Calculation
RL Time Constant =L/R = 3H / 2 = 1.5 sec

Result
In Inductor voltage leads the current by 90,and the natural response of inductor is the exponential function
