LITERATURE IN ENGLISH

TITLE : THE LANDLADY POST-MODERNISM

Irony and playfulness The author, Roald Dahl uses irony in this story through the character of the landlady. The landlady does not show her true characteristics of, but in the other way she has something hidden behind her kindness. The landlady was somehow creepy, which Billy didnt notice at all.
Example : The landlady offers a very cheap price to Billy Weaver and she also treats him nicely

Evidence 1 : How much do you charge? Five and sixpence a night, including breakfast. It was fantastically cheap. It was less than half of what he had been willing to pay. If that is too much, she added, then perhaps I can reduce it just a tiny bit.
Evidence 2 : Such charming boys, a voice behind him answered, and he turned and saw his landlady sailing into the room with a large silver tea- tray in her hands.

Techno culture The country or society has moved beyond capitalism into the information age, which mean modernization. This aspect can be seen through the setting, which was in London. London was developing at that time. Example (1) : London has train transportation Evidence : Billy Weaver had travelled down from London on the slow afternoon train, .

Example (2) : London is already advanced in education and technology

The Londoners already know about chemicals. This is shown through the landlady which she uses cyanide and put in the tea. Evidence : Not in the least, she said. I stuff all my little pets myself when they pass away. Will you have another cup of tea?

Evidence : Not in the least, she said. I stuff all my little pets myself when they pass away. Will you have another cup of tea? No, thank you, Billy said. The tea tasted faintly of bitter almonds, and he didnt much care for it.

Foreshadowing In The Landlady, Roald Dahl foreshadows a lot of things. It can be seen through the dialogues between the landlady and the man.

her blue eyes travelled slowly all the way down the length of Billys body, to his feet, and then up again.
Theyre on the third floor, both of them together.

The landlady stuffs things. She is sizing Billy up to be stuffed.

She stuffed these men, and she wants to do the same to Billy.

The tea tasted faintly bitter almonds, and he didnt much care for it.
