Types of Speaking

There are three types of speaking: talk as interaction which serves a social purpose like chatting; talk as transaction which focuses on giving and receiving information like asking directions; and talk as performance which transmits information to an audience like speeches. There are also different types of listening including top-down and bottom-up processing, reactive listening and repeating, intensive listening to sounds and words, responsive listening and responding briefly, selective listening for particular items, extensive listening for interaction, and interactive listening to discuss and debate.

Types of Speaking

1. Talk as interaction - interaction which serves a primarily a social function. e.g. activities: telling a friend about a school holiday, chatting to a school friend on hobbies 2. Talk as transaction - refers to situation where the focus is on what is said or done. the focus is on giving and receiving information. e.g. activities: asking directions, buying something in a shop, ordering food for a menu, classroom group discussion and problem solving activities. 3. Talk as performance - refers to public talk, that is, talk which transmits information before an audience such as morning talks, public announcements and speeches. e.g. activities: conducting a class debate, giving a class report about a school trip, public speaking

Types of listening

Top down, bottom up Reactive- (listen and repeat) Intensive- (listen on a focused sound, phonemes, words, intonation) Responsive- (listen and respond briefly- a greeting, giving commands, asking question, seeking clarification, checking comprehension) Selective- (listen for particular items in a longer passage- TV, radio news, media broadcasts, stories) Extensive- (listen for interactive/responsive purposes) Interactive- (listen to discuss, respond, debate)
