Definition
Neonate that is delivered prior to admission / arrival at QVMU.
Aim
To ensure that the woman and neonate are transferred to the appropriate area for assessment of ongoing care.
Specific Points
Admit to postnatal ward if a planned home / birth centre delivery being admitted for postnatal care. All other instances, admit the woman to the delivery suite. Neonate to remain with mother unless condition warrants admission to the neonatal nursery.
Method
Mother Monitor vital signs on admission. Check vaginal loss. Palpate fundus if placenta delivered. Give oxytocic drug as per protocol if required. Deliver placenta if still in situ. Assess presence and extent of perineal trauma and the need for repair. Review antenatal history (GBS status, blood group, Hb). Document findings in history, (ie; EBL T.O.B.). Complete appropriate paperwork (perinatal data form, obstetric & neonatal summary, birth register).
BABY Monitor vital signs and instigate resuscitation measures as per QVMU protocol 4.1 Maintain a warm environment. Label neonate appropriately. Administer Konakion and Hep B immunisation as per QVMU protocols 4.2 & 4.3. Complete appropriate documentation in history. Transfer mother and neonate to postnatal ward when appropriate.
