Lesson Plan Quadrilaterals

This lesson plan aims to teach students about angles in a quadrilateral. It begins with a starter activity to review quadrilaterals. Students will then learn that a quadrilateral can be decomposed into two triangles, and therefore the sum of interior angles is 360 degrees. They will practice calculating unknown angles. Finally, as a plenary, students will prove the 360 degree rule by considering the sum of exterior angles of a quadrilateral.

Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Angles in a Quadrilateral Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson: All students should understand that a quadrilateral is made up to two triangles and therefore has a sum of 360 degrees. Most students should be able to calculate an unknown angle with a quadrilateral. Some students should be able to prove there are 360 within a quadrilateral by considering the sum of its external angles. Keywords: Quadrilateral, , 360 Learning Activities Starter/Introduction Students review describing the distinctive properties of quadrilaterals by matching up the description with the shape. Encourage students to articulate their decisions through writing on the mini-whiteboards. This could be attempted in pairs to aid discussion. Development To introduce the concept of angles within a quadrilateral demonstrate with the students how a quadrilateral is formed through joining two triangles, each of which is known to have 180 degrees. Therefore the sum of the angles within a quadrilateral is 360 degrees. The Geogebra file in the additional resources can be used to illustrate this. Work through the problems on the second slide with the students showing clear written methods for breaking the problem down. Link to various other angle properties to consolidate and apply previous learning. Students should be able to work through the problems on the third slide independently. It is important to ensure that students sketch the diagrams as part of their working. Plenary The plenary is intended to consolidate the learning of the lesson by considering the sum of exterior angles to prove the sum of the interior. Deriving the proof in this way is an important learning process as it helps students appreciate the connectivity of mathematics. See the YouTube video for a demonstration if needed. Differentiation More able: Students could attempt to prove the sum of interior angles before applying it to calculate missing angles within a quadrilateral. Less Able Students could use a calculator to help with mental arithmetic Resources: Geogebra File YouTube Proof Mini-Witeboards
