Self-Cutoff Function in New High Voltage Capacitor
Problem in Conventional HV Capacitor Sudden Capacitor Failure
A conventional capacitor consists of a large dielectric film between plus and minus terminals. If the dielectric film is deteriorated or abnormal voltage exceeding the withstanding voltage is applied to the capacitor, dielectric breakdown occurs in part of the dielectric film. This causes a leakage current between the plus and minus terminals and increases dielectric breakdown around the damaged part. This breakdown immediately spreads to all parts of the dielectric film causing sudden failure of the capacitor.

Self Cutoff Function in New HV Capacitor Prevents Sudden Capacitor Failure
The new HV capacitor consists of 4,530 small cell capacitors which have a fuse. The individual cell capacitors are connected in parallel. If dielectric breakdown occurs in one cell capacitor, excessive current blows the fuse of that individual capacitor, disconnecting it from the other cell capacitors. This prevents dielectric breakdown in other cell capacitors. The number of available cell capacitors gradually decreases due to dielectric breakdown and deterioration. Thus, the capacitor gradually wears out rather than failing suddenly.

Example: One cell capacitor is damaged.1/4530 100 = 0.022% (TEC-7600) The HV capacitor can be used as long as 80% of the cell capacitors are functioning. After 20,000 defibrillations at 360 J, 95% of the cell capacitors should still be functioning. You can check the remaining lifetime of the HV capacitor in HV Capacitor Test in the System Setup screen.
