History:
The first child guidance clinic was started in Chicago in 1909 and ever since they have grown in number and complexity throughout the world. It was originally intended to deal with the problems of juvenile delinquency.

The psychiatrist is the central figure and is helped by the other in arriving to correct diagnosis and formulating the line of treatment.
The clinical psychologist is the one who helps the child to perform various tests. The diagnostic tests basically help the psychiatrist to come into the point of diagnosis and to judge the extent of limit upto which the child has improved himself.

A pediatrician takes a complete health history of the child and a complete physical assessment. Here during the physical examination he can see the cooperation of the child towards the examiner in addition to the developmental procedures of screening.

In case of an infant, questionnaire may also be used by the psychologist.

The questionnaire objectively identifies temperamental profile so that the professional person can then help the parents interact with and care their child.

The public health nurses work by supporting, counseling and reassuring the patients since the infants of various temperaments differ in their rates of development. The nurse can thus provide anticipatory guidance to parents to improve parent-child interactions.

The child guidance clinics operate on the premises that if sound foundations of mental health are laid in childhood and adolescence , the same will continue in the adulthood. Hence it is mandatory for each child with behavioral disorder to be under child guidance clinic.

Help family members to recognize the symptoms early and referring client for various services provided in clinics(eg.Day treatment programmes, psychosocial rehabilitation programmes, support groups) Working effectively with multidisciplinary approach. Counselling the family members about the benefits of visiting such clinics Monitoring effectiveness of their services (e.g.. through health visits or follow up appointment in community)
